Vinton Shellsburg FFA Celebrates National FFA Week

Annabelle Newton and Bailey Weeks taught Vinton Shellsburg students how to rope using hay bales. By: Co-Reporter, Grace Schminke From February 19th through February 26th the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter and many others celebrated National FFA Week. The chapter put together a full week of fun activities for both members and the whole school to do, there was a dress-up day for each school day of the week. On Monday, members delivered cookies to local businesses that have shown support to the chapter throughout the years.

Benton County Sheriff's Vehicle rear ended while responding to Accident on I-380

The Benton County Sheriff's Department's Deputy Coshow was assisting with an accident call on Sunday, March 6, 2022, on I-380 in Benton County. While assisting with the removal of another vehicle at the accident site, a vehicle approached the scene from the rear, at 11:40 p.m. The Iowa State Patrol report states that Caleb Rainey, 28 of Columbia, Missouri, failed to slow or change lanes to avoid the emergency vehicles.

Vinton Today was contacted by a concerned citizen about what could be considered a scam being pulled by salespersons in our county targeting veterans especially. If a company contacts you playing on that "veteran" theme, be wary.As with any "sales" call, visit, email or other communications soliciting for you to purchase a product or service, beware.

AMVETS present the local Vinton-Shellsburg FFA with Donation

Members of the AMVETS Post 218 attended the local Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter meeting to present the local organization with a donation. A former FFA member himself, Dennis Miller, told the group that "60 years ago on this day, I was serving as the FFA Chapter President in Wisconsin." Miller presented the group of about 30 students with a $200 donation to the chapter.

Tornado Sirens, when they are activated and why

Fortunately, we all survived the odd March tornado that hit Vinton. In light of the souls lost in Winterset, it's not a small thing. Scott Hansen of Benton County Emergency Management sounded the sirens across Vinton on Saturday night six minutes after we were included in a tornado warning, at 6:50 p.m. Hansen had been tracking the storms throughout the day.

Vinton Kiwanis host over 600 at Pancake Breakfast

The Old Creamery Nature Trail is closed west of Vinton to 60th St Drive. Poles are down on the trail. Avoid this area, crews are working on site.

Two drivers injured in accident near Brandon

Two people are injured following an early morning crash on Interstate 380 near Brandon.The Iowa State Patrol responded to the call at approximately 6:55 a.m. on Friday, March 4.  Justin Nosbisch, 42 or Vinton was driving eastbound following a tractor that was pulling a wagon, on 330th Street. Nosbisch was turning left onto I-380 in his Ford Fiesta when he failed to yield to Ross Wiley, 78 or Walker who was driving a GMC Sierra and struck the vehicle on the passenger side.

EF1 Tornado hits Northwest Corner of Vinton

One of Rick Primmer's Truck lays on its side following the storm Saturday night. For those of us not on the northwest corner of town, it just seemed like a heavy rainstorm and nothing major. For those north and west of Windsor Manor in the trailer park down to the northern edge of town, it looks like a tornado hit. Unofficially of course. Rick Primmer sent in a picture of one of his semis, laying on its side. Damage will be better assessed in the morning.
