VINTON POLICE DEPARTMENT - January 21st, 2022 4:41 pm
January 21, 2022, at around 3:38AM a delivery person called the Benton County Sheriff’s Office to report that a
business had been broken into and people were still inside or on the property.
Vinton Police Officers responded to a burglary in progress at John’s Qwik Stop at 804 C Avenue. After arriving
on scene, Officers determined that entry was gained through the drive through window located on the north
side of the building.

Vinton Parks and Recreation Department will be using their $2,500 grant to renovate the Esports room at the Rec Center. The Esports room hosts the high school Esports team as they compete against other schools. Esports is like every other high school sport competing against other schools in the Fall, Winter and Spring. Each season features a different game for students to compete in.

On Thursday morning, Iowa's Attorney General addressed the opioid and fentanyl use in the last year. "The deaths have been heartbreaking to see, as well as the pain and suffering of those addicted as well as their family and friends," Miller said. Miller said his office has worked really hard on the issues surrounding the crisis over the last 5 years.

"Get ready for a golf simulator to be added at VCC for the public to enjoy!" said Melody Snow of Vinton Unlimited. The Vinton Country Club received a $3,000 grant to purchase the golf simulator which will be used not only by the public, but will be in use by the high school golf team.The following people were on hand to accept the HOT Grant toward the project: Mark Wilburg, John Mossman, Chad Shmadke, Dave Redlinger, Sarah Meinders and Christine Turner.

By: Co-Reporter, Grace Schminke On Saturday, January 8th, 8 members of the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter traveled to Ankeny for the IAT conference. In this conference there are three different conferences including the Ignite Conference for Freshmen, Amplify for Sophomores and Juniors, and Transform for Seniors. In each of these conferences, members learn different skills that they can bring back to their chapter.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #8884 received a $2,000 grant for storage space in order to open up more room in the Post for events.The Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary also accepted a $2,000 grant for kitchen improvements to host public events.Both the VFW Post #8884 and the VFW Auxilary are very active in the community with kids of all ages as well as hosting several events in their location.

Grants to support computer science professional development are now available. Iowa school districts, accredited nonpublic schools, Area Education Agencies and collaboratives are encouraged to apply.The grant program, known as the Computer Science Professional Development Incentive Fund, is intended to help build the capacity of high-quality computer science instruction within Iowa’s schools.

Vinton Unlimited organizes several events that benefit the town of Vinton. This year their HOT Grants will be used in the following ways. $3,000 toward the Deck the House Christmas Lighting incentive in conjunction with the Vinton Parks and Recreation Department.$3,000 toward printing Vinton Brochures$3,000 toward Boomtown Advertising$3,000 for advertising of the summer downtown concert to be held on June 11.

Virginia Gay Hospital received a $2,000 HOT Grant toward the 10th Annual Party in Pink Walk/Run 5K Race. This fundraising event for Gifts of Hope is held in conjunction with the Vinton’s annual community celebration, Party in the Park. The 5K walk/run is usually scheduled for Friday evening during the third weekend in June. The event draws participants from several states and is often a great opportunity for family reunions.

The American Library Association will recognize Vinton's Public Library Director, Renee Greenlee, at the "I Love my Librarian" award ceremony.
