It's the Most Wonderful Ride of the Year - Christmas Isn't Finished Yet!

Iowa's Ride will be the Most Wonderful Ride when after stopping in Vinton Iowa's Ride will roll into town from Monticello on Monday, July 13. The riders will stop in Vinton and camp out at the Braille School property, aka as the North Pole or stay overnight in homes (if you'd like to open your home contact Nate Hesson who is coordinating homes).It is expected that riders could begin to arrive on Monday morning, but most are expected to arrive midday and pull out on the morning of Tuesday the 14th.

April 22 Honor Flight postponed

The Eastern Iowa Honor Flight that was scheduled for Wednesday, April 22 will not occur on that day, but will be rescheduled. Due to the COVID -19 ( Coronavirus) , the National Honor Flight Organization has required all local Honor Flight hubs to suspend flights through April 30th.  For the safety of our travelers, the April flight orientation that was scheduled for Sunday, March 15 was also cancelled, and will be rescheduled when a new flight date is determined.

Candidates Needed for Benton County Fair Queen

The Benton County Fair is looking for young women who are interested in serving as a representative of the fair by becoming the Benton County Fair Queen. As a representative for the Benton County Fair, the queen will be asked to assist with various contests and activities during the county fair in June as well as helping with other promotional activities/parades.

Thank you all of you WONDERFUL readers and advertisers, you're amazing! VINTON TODAY celebrates 10 years!To say that the last 10 years have gone by fast is an understatement. I still remember the mere few hours between walking out of a newspaper office and the phone call to start something that had never been done before. I'm not a risk taker, I like to know things are safe and guaranteed. Starting an online newspaper that was operated without a backup plan, like a savings account was not something I would have ever imagined doing.

Additional COVID-19 Cases in Iowa

Testing at Iowa’s State Hygienic Laboratory has indicated five additional presumptive positive cases of 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in Iowa residents, a total of 13 presumptive positive cases. 14 additional tests were negative. All five new cases are in self isolation and recovering at home. According to the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), the five new cases are all older adults (61 to 80 years) from Johnson County and were on the same Egyptian cruise as seven other presumptive positive cases.

Middle School Band Showcase

The Vinton Shellsburg Middle School Showcase was held Tuesday evening On Tuesday evening, the Vinton-Shellsburg High School hosted the Middle School Band Showcase, which featured 6th, 7th, 8th Grade and Middle School Jazz directed by Makayla Prall.The evening consisted of well over 100 students participating in the evening. The 6th Grade Band performed, "Starsplitter Fanfare" and "Stormchasing," and the 7th Grade Band played the son "The Tempest.

Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast a brings Friends and Neighbors out for a worthy cause

A crowd filled the High School cafeteria on Saturday morning for the Kiwanis Breakfast It's an annual tradition to attend the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast in Vinton. Since 1960 the Kiwanis Club members have rolled up their sleeves, tied on their aprons, grabbed their pancake flippers and fired up the grills to serve pancakes, eggs and sausage to all who walk through the door looking hungry.The club uses the proceeds as its main fundraiser to support several local projects in the community.

Izaak Walton League serves as a place for kids, and adults

The Izaak Walton League has put a lot of effort into the land just north of town. Several areas of the land have been returned to its natural state eliminating some of the invasive plants that had grown in the area. The area is roughly 80 acres and is available through the league for target practice for those that might that need a place to shoot. The Izaak Walton League is part of a conservation effort to restore, and promote the sustainable use and enjoyment of natural resources, including soil, air, woods, waters, and wildlife.

Vinton man injured in 3 vehicle accident in Fairfax

A Vinton man was injured in a three vehicle accident on Sunday morning in Fairfax.Emergency responders were called to the accident near Williams Boulevard and 80th Street in Fairfax just before 10 a.m. on Sunday morning.Three vehicles had crashed at the intersection. Scott Heubner, 47, of Vinton was on 80th Street and pulled in front of a vehicle driven by Michael Huber, 62, of Walford.
