V-S FFA Member Attends World Food Prize

By: Co-Reporter, Juliana LuisVinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter member Brody Waters made his way to Des Moines for the Global Youth Institute at the World Food Prize on October 24th. The World Food Prize was founded by Norman Borloug in 1986 to honor individuals who have contributed to improving the availability and quality of food worldwide. In order for Brody to advance to the Global Youth Institute he had to submit an essay about food insecurities in another country.

Koop's continues annual tradition collecting Toys for Area Children

Friday will be the last day to make donations to the Angel Tree Toy Drive at Koop's Sales and Service. If you can't get out to do the shopping, drop off your donation, and they will be happy to shop for you!ALL toys donated will stay here in Benton County.The business said, "A huge THANK YOU to everyone who's brought us toys....that's AWESOME!!! Local Banks are calling all Elves!

The tree with the gift tags at Farmers Savings Bank & Trust It has been reported that another Angel Tree visit has been made decorating area trees at Farmers Savings Bank & Trust, US Bank and Cedar Valley Bank & Trust with needed items for Benton County children. Every Christmas, Santa recruits area volunteers to help with the gift preparations for children in Benton County. With only a week or so left before Angel Tree calls the families of these children, several gifts are still needed.

Arnold Motor Supply donates toys for local Angel Tree

Toys will be delivered today to the Angel Tree project from Arnold Motor Supply and its customers Arnold Motor Supply continues in its annual Christmas tradition. The businese collects toys and donations to support the Angel Tree program at the Christmas season. This will be the 38th season of Arnold Motor Supply;s efforts to support the program.  With a tight economy, this year will no doubt be a difficult Christmas for many families who have young children.

Benton County Employees pay it forward this Christmas Season

The county employees donated gifts to brighten the season for these families.Sue Wilber, Human Resources for Benton County delivered the gifts to the elementary school in Vinton on Wednesday. Wilber said of the employees, "I am so proud of the generosity of our County!"This representation includes donations from the courthouse staff, conservation, secondary roads, service center, sheriff’s office, and transportation.

Santa rings bell for the Salvation Army

Santa Claus made a stop at the Vinton Fareway to lend a hand by ringing the bell for the Salvation Army If you happened to visit Fareway last week you saw jolly St. Nick helping the local Salvation Army to ring the bell. Answering questions from the little visitors, who asked, "Are you the real Santa one or the one with the stretchy beard?" He assured those in question that he is 1700 years old so of COURSE he's the real one!The Salvation Army of Benton County says "Thank You!" to those who have already committed to help ring the bell.

Breakfast with Santa Brings smiles and hugs for Santa

Santa gets a hug at the Breakfast with Santa event Once again, Santa made his stop at the Vinton Skate Center. He was invited by the elves who work for the Vinton Parks and Rec to meet with area children after a breakfast prepared by the kitchen elves. Many of the children had requests for Santa. A few of the smallest weren't so sure what to do with the bearded fellow and let mom and dad know that.

Meeker honored by the U of I with Lifetime Achievement & Service Award

Dr. Meeker recognized with Lifetime Achievement and Service Award Photo: University of Iowa Dr. Brian Meeker, of Virginia Gay Hospital was awarded the University of Iowa PA Program Lifetime Achievement and Service Award for his years of service to PA education. In an article from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, Department of Physician Assistant Studies and Services, the university recognized him for mentoring between 9 and 11 students each year for decades.

Vinton Lions Club longest serving support group of Eastern Iowa Honor Flight

The Vinton Lions Club present Easter Iowa Honor Flight with support for Iowa Veterans The Vinton Lions Club has continually supported the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight since 2010 by serving a chili supper at the Vinton Fire Station. They hold the distinguished honor of being the longest-serving support group of the Eastern Iowa Honor Flight. On September 20, 2022, a flight was named after Vinton Lions Club for their continued support.Many Veterans never received a " THANK YOU" when they returned from their service.
