Local photo Competing at the Iowa State Fair needs your Vote
If you are fortunate enough to make it to the Iowa State Fair this year, be sure to stop by the Iowa Cattlemen's Association booth. The organization is trying to decide which photo represents Iowa the best. They are looking for the best out of the top 10. The photo was taken by Laurie Ortner on her family farm. It features a beautiful rainbow above cattle grazing in the field below.

Benton County Community Foundation to Host Grant Guidelines Workshop
The Benton County Community Foundation (BCCF) will host a public grant workshop on
September 11 to discuss the BCCF’s 2024 grant cycle. Held at Blairstown City Hall at 6:00 p.m., the
workshop will cover the grant guidelines, budget template and application and will provide grant writing
tips. There will also be time for Q&A.
Individuals, especially those interested in applying for a 2024 grant, are encouraged to attend the

Dan Boddicker Claims Big Prize In ‘Lucky 7 Bonus’ Game
Dan Boddicker of Vinton purchased his winning “Lucky 7 Bonus” scratch ticket at Vinton Express, 310 S. K Ave. in Vinton. He claimed his prize Monday at the lottery’s Cedar Rapids regional office. Boddicker is the 33rd player to claim a $10,000 prize in the game.Lucky 7 Bonus is a $20 scratch game that features 20 top prizes of $250,000, 76 prizes of $10,000 and overall odds of 1 in 2.
Benton County Board of Supervisor Notes for 8/6/24 - Part 1 - Road Closure
Tuesday's Supervisor meeting began with a call to order, and a change to the agenda, taking off item 10 until a later time. The Agenda was then approved as well as minutes from the last meeting. All members of the board were present, Rick Primmer, Tracy Seeman, and Gary Bierschenk.First up was to discuss/approve vacation time/sick leave changes that were approved for the County Handbook.
New towers are up - "Drive Test" is commencing (See note on this)
Tracy Seeman reported in Tuesday's Supervisor meeting that the tower project by Racom is now about 95% complete. Shellsburg, Atkins, Newhall and Mt. Auburn are waiting for the coaxial cord to be run from the tower to the stations for the base radios. The cord finally came in last week, so they are finishing up connecting these. Seeman also reported that there is a lot of waste from the old towers, and it has been cleaned up and the sites appear much cleaner now.
Library Auction: 25 Volume Mark Twain Collection
The Vinton Public Library is selling a collection of 25 books by Mark Twain, The Author's National Collection. Go to this link to bid and read details. The auction ends on August 8 at 2:36 p.m. CST. It appears that there is a signature in one of the books. A quick google brought this up concerning the signature.
Vinton Class of 1965 Reunites
The Vinton Class of 1965 held a Class Reunion this year. Meeting on Friday night the group went to Berry's Lanes and on Saturday they enjoyed a meal catered by Smokin' on the Cedar at the George G. The Race is On...almost!
Shelby Van Weelden, daughter of Vinton Unlimited's Director, Melody Snow has begun her final training for the race of a lifetime. Shelby is a firefighter in Cedar Rapids and began making plans to ride in the Annual Mongol Derby, in Outer Mongolia. She spoke to the local Kiwanis Club last year about her upcoming trip. She reported a few days ago that she was in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia and began her training yesterday.
National Night Out - Tuesday, August 6, 5-7 p.m.
Join area law enforcement on August 6th from 5-7:00 p.m. at Riverside Park in Vinton for a night of fun. The Benton County Sheriff's Department will have the 'Hidden in Plain Sight' trailer available where parents can learn more about drug prevention. Just for fun, a dunk tank will be there where you can test your aim! Special guests from BACA (Bikers Against Child Abuse) will also be available.
