Vinton welcomes the Former Vice President Joe Biden

Former Vice President Joe Biden visits Vinton as part of his campaign stops With the caucuses in Iowa on the radar of every presidential candidate’s mind, Vinton has had the opportunity to host some of the bigger candidates in the race. Former Vice President the Honorable Joe Biden made a stop on Saturday to the Vinton Tilford middle school. With close to 200 residents in attendance, he spoke to the crowd addressing current events and at time pulling his relationships with other Iowans out to share their stories as well.

Faces of Benton County Nominees: Dan and Alice Stramer

Meet Dan and Alice Stramer, Watkins residents who together have spent close to fifteen years spreading joy throughout Benton County (and beyond!) by playing Santa and Mrs. Claus.Dan and Alice are the eighth nomination to the Family Nurturing Council’s Faces of Benton County campaign. The Stramers were nominated by their friend Rhonda Vogel who works at Norway Intermediate School.

Former Vice President Biden took a few minutes out to visit with Sage Holmes and his family Saturday     Back in 2007, Vinton was Ground-Zero for the run-up to the 2008 Iowa Caucuses. I don’t know what it was, but back when we were running The Vinton Eagle (that we founded, but never get credit for), it seemed like about all we did was talk to presidential candidates. At one point we were averaging two or three visits a week; I started to feel like I was in the campaigns.

Wesley United Methodist Church seeking donations

The Wesley United Methodist Church which holds a Food Pantry at their church is seeking donations of jams and jellies for the month of January. You are welcome to drop off any donations at the church which is located next to the library.

These little piggies should've stayed home

Thursday morning found a load of hogs on their way to market, we assume. The semi driver took a detour into the ditch on 22nd Ave. Trail, aka the Mt. Auburn road just south of  Kersten's light display. The driver, James Rose of Arlington left the roadway heading south when he went into the ditch on the west side of the road. Carrying 170 hogs, some were injured in the accident.

Faces of Benton County: Jen Rowray

Meet Jen Rowray, a Newhall resident who spent more than twelve years as a foster parent for more than 50 kids and today works to create inclusive environments for all Iowans. Jen is the seventh nomination to the Family Nurturing Council’s Faces of Benton County campaign. Jen was nominated by her friend Jen Loeb. “Jen Rowray has dedicated her life to lifting up others in the community,” Loeb wrote on Jen’s nomination form.

City Council Moves to appoint Andrew Elwick to 2nd Ward Seat

Before opening the Citizen's Input section of the meeting, Mayor Bud Maynard instructed those in attendance that there would be a 2 minute time limit to speak.

Body recovered from area pond

Update:12/27/19This morning at about 10:42 AM, divers from the Johnson County Dive Team recovered the body of Shannan Lee Hughes, age 47, of rural Vinton IA, at a private pond located at 6235 33rd Ave Dr, Shellsburg IA.In a news release from the Benton County Sheriff's Department, they released the following information. "On 12-26-19, at about 5:34 PM, Benton County 911 received a report of a possible drowning at a private pond about 1 mile northeast of Shellsburg IA.

City Council Moves to Reconsider Elwick Appointment

Thursday night, December 26, the Vinton City Council held a 10 minute meeting which can be seen here covering a variety of topics. Hessenius added a new item to the agenda as number seven on the agenda for the evening. This is addressed in the final paragraph of this article.Near the top of the discussion was the appointment of Andrew Elwick to the City Council.
