Angel Tree Deadline Monday, Several Tags Remain

US Bank and Farmers Bank house Angel Trees in their buildings which contain tags listing the needs of area children. There are still several tags on the trees. The deadline for the gifts will be this coming Monday. The tags include the descriptions of necessary items for children. Please be sure to make a trip to the bank to choose a few tags

Jared Rude, former Benton County State Trooper in need of Prayer and Support

Jared Rude an Iowa State Trooper formerly serving Benton County is in need at this time Jared Rude a former Iowa State Trooper assigned to Benton and Tama Counties suffered a fall at his home last week resulting in a traumatic head injury. Jared served alongside his dad Gregg who was also a State Trooper that was assigned to Benton County in the '80s. In the picture below, the two are shown at the last Iowa Football detail that Gregg served on and Jared's first.

Shellsburg woman charged with theft, false ID info and etc.

Dawn Janey Tucker, 40 of Shellsburg, was arrested on Sunday morning, at 1:08 a.m. for driving a stolen vehicle. Officers of the Cedar Rapids Police Department saw a vehicle at about 1:00 a.m. in the 5000 block of Edgweood Rd. NE with a license plate that did not match the description of the appropriate vehicle to which it belonged.The plates came back to a Ford motor home, but the plates came back to a 2014 Nissa Versa that had been reported stolen through the Marion Police Department on October 30th.

Santa Visits Skate Center for Breakfast

Santa, it's been soooo long! Children lined up at the skate center to see Santa on Saturday morning It's a tradition to visit with Santa over some pancakes, at least in Vinton it is. The skate center was filled with little children waiting for their turn on Santa's knee after filling their tummy with pancakes and sausage. There weren't cookies and milk for Santa, but he was too busy greeting the children and handing out goodies to each of them after a round on his knee.

Faces of Benton County Nominee: Dylanne Schrock

MEET DYLANNE SCHROCK, a young advocate for inclusivity making a difference in Benton County!Dylanne is a 16-year-old student from Urbana and a junior at Center Point-Urbana High School.Dylanne was nominated for Faces of Benton County by her dad, Mike Schrock.“[Dylanne] is a motivated and kind-hearted young lady,” Mike wrote on Dylanne’s nominating form.

Troop 47 learns from Sergeant Parmeter and Gino as part of their skill training

Sergeant Ben Parmater and his K-9 Gino of the Vinton Police Department made a visit to the local Boy Scout Troop 47 which met at Isaac Walton. The boys watched as the team demonstrated the dog's ability to search and locate controlled substances. The local troop is working on their crime prevention skill for the month.

Kersten Light Display still creating memories

Stop out to see the Kersten light display located north of Vinton, and take a snack for Shorty Heidi Kersten has done it again. Continuing the Christmas tradition that many of us grew up with since 1964, the lights at the Kersten home are again on display. Fewer than in other years, but the display highlights some of the memorable ones. Making a trip to Kerstens each year since I was born, (at least that's what I've been told) it brings back a feeling of nostalgia.

Faces of Benton County Nominee: Renee Graham

MEET RENEE GRAHAM, a young advocate working to address food insecurity and hunger in Benton County!Renee is the second nominee for Faces of Benton County. She is a 16-year-old sophomore at Vinton-Shellsburg High School and lives in Garrison with her mom Rondalyn and her brother Jake.Renee was nominated by Erin Monaghan who, along with Barb Rego, started the mobile food pantry at Wesley United Methodist Church seven years ago.
