Vinton Unlimited Annual Golf Tournament

Take a swing at the Vinton Unlimited annual two-person best shot golf tournament! Taking place at the Vinton Country Club, this golf tournament is scheduled for Friday, July 7th at 4:00 PM. The evening's top golfers take home cash prizes! This annual golf tournament is so much more than just a round of golf - participants also get to play fun games with our 2017 hole sponsors, have the opportunity to win raffle prizes, and are given the chance to purchase mulligan and/or granny shots.

Party in Pink: Celebrating survivors, raising funds for women's health

The 5th Annual Party in Pink filled Riverside Park and the nearby streets with many runners, including several children, wearing pink and helping to honor breast cancer survivors while raising money for the VGH Gifts of Hope fund. The winners were JoeScieszinski of Cedar Rapids and Angela Nading-Annis of Maynard. Many members of the VS cross country team placed in their age division.

Conference showdowns: Vikings lose one, tie one at W Dubuque; sweep Maquoketa

The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings, ranked third in Class 3A in the most recentIowa High School Baseball Coaches Association/Radio Iowa poll, faced off with Wamac West rival Western Dubuque (ranked 10th in Class 4A) on Thursday, in Epworth. Both games were as close as possible, with the first game going into extra innings, and the second called in the seventh inning due to lightning with the game tied.

Water, garbage rates to increase for Vinton residents; council also to consider sewer rate increase soon

Vinton residents will see an increase of approximately $12 in their monthly utility bills (water and solid waste disposal) beginning in August, and a probable increase in sewer rates as well in the near future. During Wednesday's meeting, the Vinton City Council approved the first readings of ordinances designed to increase the city's landfill rate to $19.

The students listed below graduated from Mount Mercy University this June. A commencement ceremony was held Sunday, May 21, 2017, at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Mount Mercy's 1,900 students come from around the globe, creating a vibrant, diverse and open-minded campus community. Popular undergraduate majors include business, nursing, criminal justice, education and social work.

Preschool Scholarship Funding Available

Better Tomorrows Early Childhood Iowa is announcing that applications are available for preschool tuition assistance for children who reside in Benton and Tama County. In order to qualify for scholarships, children will need to attend a contracted licensed center or preschool facility. To be eligible families must show proof of income and be at or below 200% of poverty.

Grants, local fund-raising bring Gualtier documentary closer to completion; premiere expected in January

The full-length documentary on John Gualtier, the Vinton World War II medic who was among the first Americans to witness the Holocaust, is coming closer to reality, thanks to grants and the success of local fund-raisers. "The film will definitely get made," says producer Brent Watkins. The project has just received a $10,000 Major Media grant from Humanities Iowa, and Watkins expects that it will receive another $10,000 Major Media grant later this year.
