Party in Pink 5k: Don't miss out on the fun!

The evening begins at 5:30 p.m. with a Kids Fun Run, followed by the 5K and 1 mile walk/run at 6:00 p.m. Entertainment, food and fireworks complete the evening activities. 23 to Zero: Ruck raises awareness of veteran suicide issue

Several participants, including many children, joined Benton County Veterans Affairs Director Toni Parizek for the 23 to Zero Ruck on Saturday. Beginning at Veterans Park, the 5K walk was designed to raise awareness of the issue of suicides among active duty military personnel and veterans, and to offer information and support for those dealing with PTSD and other issues.

Mount Mercy University celebrates Class of 2017

The students listed below graduated from Mount Mercy University this May. A commencement ceremony was held Sunday, May 21, 2017, at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Mount Mercy University is the regional Catholic, Mercy University that promises students of diverse backgrounds, ages and faiths a challenging, practical education that inspires them to discover knowledge, build community and lead courageous lives.

Eggert recognized as distinguished graduate

  Morgan Eggert of Atkins, was recognized by Concordia University, Nebraska, as an undergraduate who graduated with distinction or high distinction honors based on academic achievements. Nearly 10 percent of the undergraduate class have graduated with high distinction, and an additional six percent of the class have graduated with distinction.

Lillie leads VS on All-Wamac West soccer team; Vikettes advance with win over Benton at Districts

Hayley Dinderman, 2nd team All-District. Vinton-Shellsburg junior Kamryn Lillie has been named to the First Team of the All-Wamac West soccer team, one of four Vikettes honored on that list. Lillie is among the team's leaders in scoring and assists. Other VS honorees include: Haley Dinderman, 2nd Team Bif Davis Walker, Honorable Mention Taylor Berry: Honorable Mention.

VS baseball: Vikes sweep CPU to remain undefeated

After a comparatively easy sweep at East Marshall, the VS Vikings baseball team needed some big innings and big outs to defeat Center Point-Urbana, 12-6, and 11-8 Tuesday at Vinton. Coach Jim Struve shared the following summary Game #1 Vikings were down 6-1 when they scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning to tie the game. Scottie Wirth pitched 6 2/3 innnings with 9 strikeouts to get the win and Scott Betterton got the save.

3rd Grade Ag Day

Every year during the springtime, 3rd graders from the surrounding schools attend this event to learn about many different aspects of agriculture. It is very important for young children to know about different animals, farm equipment safety, and other areas of agriculture.

Students attend Iowa State University College of Human Sciences first-year Orientation

Seventy-two incoming first-year College of Human Sciences students participated in Orientation at Iowa State University in Ames, May 31-June 1. As part of the program, students and their families met peers, signed up for classes, became familiar with the campus, and learned tips for making the most of their college careers. June 21 Field Day Highlights Ag Weather Forecast with Elwynn Taylor

The Annual Spring Field Day at the ISU Northeast Research and Demonstration Farm will run from 1:00 to 4:15 PM. Elwynn Taylor, ISU Extension Climatologist, will kick-off the program in the Borlaug Learning Center, by providing his insights on crop weather for the 2017 growing season. Tom Kaspar, USDA-ARS, follows with updates and the latest information on cover crop practices for growers in NE Iowa.
