Youth Advocate Meets with Members of Congress about Protecting Kids from Tobacco

A local high school student met with U.S. Rep. Rod Blum (R-IA) and U.S. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) last week to discuss the need for strong action to protect kids from newer tobacco products, including electronic cigarettes and flavored cigars that have become popular with kids. Caitlyn Martin, 17, of Vinton, Iowa, was in Washington, D.C. to participate in an anti-tobacco leadership workshop sponsored by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.

Tornado-affected families encouraged to apply for assistance

Leaders remind families that the tornado assistant program registration deadline is Aug. 31. The Benton County Disaster Recovery Coalition would like to thank all the citizens impacted by the July 17th EF2 tornado who have applied for the Iowa Assistance Disaster Grant Program and the Benton County Disaster Recovery Coalition Assistance programs. Not everyone who was impacted has applied through the programs. The Benton County Disaster Recovery Coalition is encouraging all tornado impacted families to complete applications by the August 31st deadline.

'Best time of year' for sweet corn lovers and families who sell it

Brady Ornter and his cousin Annabelle Newton are among area farm kids selling sweet corn now. “It's the best time of the year,” says Vinton resident Kendra Spencer. Spencer is referring to what many call “Sweet Corn Season,” the weeks in July and August when area farmers pluck ears from their fields and sell them by the dozen at Farmer's Markets or from the back of pick-up trucks in area parking lots. “As an Iowa girl, this has always been a treat for me,” says Spencer.

Cottage Garden Society beautifies Vinton with flowers

The Cottage Garden Society of Vinton helped provide a touch of beauty to the downtown Vinton area. Members of the society donated their time and talent; with the help of the local FFA the pots are delivered and collected again in the fall. Those students involved also earn Black and Gold hours for their assistance with this program.

Storm impact on V-S property minimal; school year to begin as scheduled

Despite one close call at Tilford Elementary School and a very close call at the Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School/Administration Building and wind damage that affected the main heating and cooling unit of Shellsburg Elementary, the Vinton-Shellsburg district escaped major building damage during the July 17 tornado in Vinton and wind storm in Shellsburg, reports Superintendent Mary Jo Hainstock.

Shellsburg's newest Marine earns Expert Marksmanship status

New Marine Keenan Brown with his grandfather, Monte Railsback, who became a Marine in 1956. Sixty years after his grandfather, retired Marine Master Sergeant Monte Railsback, graduated from Marine Crops Recruit Depot in San Diego, Calif., Marine Private Keenan Brown graduated there on 8 July 2016.   Keenan is the son of Ken and Kandis Brown and grandson of Monte and Mary Ann Railsback all of Shellsburg. He is a 2015 graduate of Vinton-Shellsburg High School.

Caseworker assigned to help those displaced by tornado; residents urged to apply

Residents of Imperial Apartments continue dealing with storm damage and looking for housing. The Benton County Disaster Recovery Coalition has hired a case manager to work with the residents affected by last weeks’ tornado. We encourage those residents that still need any assistance, especially those that still do not have a long term housing solution, to call our case manager Sherry at 319-241-5121. She can schedule an appointment to meet with you or she may be able to provide what you need over the phone.

Free school supplies distribution day set for Aug. 9, at Clickstop Cares

Distribution of free school supplies for families in need will take place at Clickstop Cares on Tuesday, August 9 from 2:00-6:00 pm AND Wednesday, August 17 from 3:00-7:00 pm.  Clickstop Cares is located at 2535 Bing Miller Lane in Urbana at the company’s warehouse location just past the REC office (NOT the main Clickstop office on I-380).
