Vinton Shellburg Student Taryn Martin attends Iowa HOBY Leadership Seminar

Taryn Martin, a Vinton-Shellsburg sophomore, was selected to attend the 2024 Iowa Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Seminar at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. Every year, one sophomore student in every Iowa public and private high school is chosen to attend.The Iowa HOBY annual leadership seminar is designed to prepare high school sophomores to become effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, workplace and community.

Iowans Encouraged to Visit Farmers Markets, Vouchers for Low-Income Seniors

Low-income seniors and WIC recipients can use vouchers to purchase fresh, local and nutritious produce at participating vendorsAs summer kicks off, Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig is encouraging Iowa families to visit and support the more than 200 farmers markets located across the state. Farmers markets and farm stands provide consumers with easy access to local fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey, cut flowers, eggs, meat, cheese, craft beer, Iowa wine and many other fresh or prepared products.

Fourth Victim Succumbs to Injuries Received During Attack

The fourth victim in the attack that killed three others last Wednesday has died. The Linn County Sheriff’s Office reported that Brent Brown, 34, passed away on Friday according to the Johnson County Medical Examiner.Luke Truesdell has now been charged with a fourth count of first-degree murder. The three other victims of the attack, Romondus Cooper, Keonna Ryan and Amanda Parker had all died from their injuries in an outbuilding at the 3600 block of East Otter Road in northern Linn County.

Benton County Fair Queen Bio: Grayce McClintock

My name is Grayce McClintock, I recently graduated from Vinton-Shellsburg High School and am attending Iowa State University this fall, and majoring in Agricultural Studies. I live in Shellsburg on my family’s 5th generation farm where we have a contract wean-to-finish swine operation and grow 1,000 acres of corn and soybeans. My parents are Ryan and Kelli McClintock, and I have a younger brother Cooper, and a younger sister Zoey.

My name is Olivia Hanson and I live just outside of LaPorte City, Iowa. I am the daughter of Robert and Maureen Hanson and I am the 5th of 6 kids in my family. I am a proud member of the Bruce Boosters 4-H club and the LaPorte-Dysart FFA Chapter. Through 4-H I have been involved in static projects, communications projects, livestock projects and the Benton County 4-H Livestock Skills team.

Vinton Woman victim in Linn County Triple Murder

Amanda Sue Parker On Wednesday by night, the Linn County Sheriff's Department responded to a call in the 3600 block of East Otter Road, north of Robins. As a result of the call, according to police reports, Luke Wade Truesdell, 34 of Marion was arrested and has been charged with one count of attempted murder and three counts of First Degree Murder. Among the three victims was a Vinton woman who lost her life.

$7.8 Million in Grants to Help Connect Iowans to Critical Services

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) today announced $7.8 million for 17 projects that will improve public transportation for people with disabilities, older adults, and low-income individuals. The grants support organizations that coordinate public transportation for underserved groups, allowing them to access healthcare, community services, education, and jobs by building partnerships among health, transportation, and human services providers.
