"Twisty the Fly and I go to a Garage Sale" now available
Waylon Struve, six years old, gave the inspiration for a book written by his aunt Breanna Stephenson. It all started because of an ordinary morning in the Struve home. It began with the birth of a fly that Waylon had named, "Twisty." The story goes, that while Waylon was eating breakfast he noticed a fly in the house and immediately named it. I was born and raised on a family farm west of Norway. I attended Norway schools and graduated in 1976. I worked for United Airlines for 27 years, that is where I met my wife. Unfortunately, after 911, the airline industry suffered greatly and we both lost our full time jobs on the same day. I started a Commercial Janitorial business and ran it for 12 years, selling it in 2014.

Since I submitted my background information in a prior article, I would like to take the opportunity to explain why I am the best candidate for Benton County Supervisor. My goals are simple and are answers to the highest priority problems I feel Benton County is currently experiencing.1. Honesty, Transparency, and Trust. Unfortunately, the current Supervisors have lost the trust of Benton County citizens by their actions.

Volunteer Auction Funds V-S FFA Activities
By: Co-Reporter, Izzie BirkerOn Monday, April 8th the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter held their annual Volunteer Auction. At this event, members can sign up to volunteer their time within the community doing a variety of tasks including basic chores like mowing or cooking, babysitting, working concession stands, picking rock, and gardening just to name a few. Some of our beautiful Dahlias at the plant sales!

In the greenhouse this year, there were many different varieties of flowers, hanging baskets, planter boxes and so much more! During the sale, the High School Greenhouse Management students and FFA members came in to work the sales to enhance the customer experience. Storm damage and flooding impact some Iowa state parks for Memorial Day weekendSeveral Iowa state parks have been impacted by recent heavy rains and storms, causing closures in some areas. Visitors are urged to plan in advance heading into the holiday weekend in case a park activity or location is affected. Impacted parks include:Backbone State Park (Delaware County) - The north gate entrance is currently closed.
Local churches are calling for volunteers to help staff summer lunch program
The Vinton Area Ministerial Association, on behalf of the Vinton Shellsburg Community School District summer lunch program is calling for volunteers! Starting June 3rdon Monday through Friday, volunteers are needed at Tilford Elementary and Shellsburg Elementary from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Those who volunteer will be taking part in a program that invites all children to a free lunch Monday through Friday.
