Easton's Toy Drive brings $6,013

In memory of Easton Lindeman, his family gather donations to cheer up other children in the hospital After the loss of her son three-year-old Easton, Samantha Lindeman decided that each year, on Easton's birthday, the family would do something to honor him. The family has once again, collected donations and made a delivery to the 11th floor of the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital. Bringing with them all kinds of gifts for the children there, the family purchased toys, games, books, comfort items and art supplies to give to the tiny patients.

VGH CEO Pleads Guilty to Embezzling $3.2 Million from former employer

Euan David MacGregor, formerly known as David Joseph Bean, 54, of Iowa City, Iowa, pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of wire fraud for defrauding his former employer out of more than $3.2 million, U.S. Attorney Phillip A. Talbert announced.According to court documents, between November 2014 and January 2020, Euan MacGregor, then known as David Bean, used his position as a Chief Administrative Officer to embezzle money from his employer.

Local FFA visit Lost Island on Summer Outing

By: Co-Reporter, Izzie BirkerOn Monday, July 22nd, FFA members went to Lost Island WaterPark for their annual Summer Outing. 25 FFA members came and had a great day at Lost Island.Members visited many of the slides and pools that the Lost Island WaterPark offers. One of the members, Braedon Hepker said "I really enjoyed going to the Lost Island with all my friends that I haven't seen in a while, I also had an amazing time on all of the slides and the wave pool.

Walking down Memory Lane at the East School

Every once in a while, something comes across the "news wire" which brings up all the feels. Today it was an old news clip about bats in the attic of the old East School. I haven't been in that building since 5th grade when we walked over there for lunch. That was just a few weeks ago. This walk down memory lane has Joan Sainsbury in it from 1980, according to the date, and it was fun to see her again! My only regret is that they didn't show the third floor a little more, that apparently housed a gym, something I've never seen and probably never will since the building is now on the "it's too dangerous to enter" list.

Grovert Twins bring home 2nd in the Most Alike Twin at the Iowa State Fair

Nora and Jenna Grover continue to bring home ribbons for being Not everyone could bet on winning in a competition at the Iowa State Fair. The Grovert sisters can. Nora and Jenna Grovert have competed every year (except the year the fair was down during 2020) Every year, they've placed in the top four slots. This year, the two won 2nd place in the 12-17 age category for the "most alike twins" in the Twins Triplets and More Contest.

Benton County Board of Supervisor Meeting Notes 8/20/24

Tuesday's meeting of the Benton County Supervisor's began at 9:00 a.m.  All three supervisors were present, Rick Primmer, Tracy Seeman and Gary Bierschenck. The agenda and minutes were approved. Also approved was a Special Class C Retail Alcohol License for Kacena Family Tree Farm, Inc.Discussion and approval was held concerning the Benton County Handbook for sections 4.

County Accepts resignation of HR Director, $140,000+ Awarded

The resignation of Sue Wilber, HR Director was discussed at the Supervisor's meeting on Tuesday.According to the agreement, (attached below) she will receive $140,000, plus her salary through October 15, 2024, as well as health insurance, unpaid vacation, and payment of tuition in the Leadership Iowa Program. The county will also NOT contest an application for unemployment benefits.

2024-2025 FFA Vinton-Shellsburg Officer Retreat

Names at the end of the article By: Co-Reporter, Izzie BirkerThis year's Vinton-Shellsburg officer retreat occurred on Thursday, July 25th-Saturday, July 27th. These officers went on this trip to McGregor, Iowa, to work on their team skills and problem-solving, before working on getting to know each other before the new year started. The officers got to do many fun things throughout the weekend such as mini golfing, go-karting, hiking, swimming, and boating on the Mississippi.
