Union Carolers continue filling area with historic Christmas music

The Union Carolers performed more than 50 times this holiday season, including at Windsor Manor. For the past 13 years, the Union Carolers have been dressing up and singing holiday favorites at a variety of placers. The students from Union High School in La Porte, along with choir director Tim Mitchell, sang at more than 50 places in December.  They performed recently at Windsor Manor in Vinton.  For more information, contact Mitchell at t_mitchell@union.

Celebrating Christmas at VSHS

Santa joined the Voyagers for a dance during the VHSH Talent Show on Tuesday. The Vinton-Shellsburg High School students and staff ended their day before the Christmas break with a talent show in the VSHS auditorium.  The VS Voyagers danced with Santa. Teachers told horrible holiday puns. Others performed comedy routines while a few sang serious songs.  See more photos HERE. 

VSHS athletic teams honored for academic achievement

Vinton-Shellsburg High School is pleased to announce that several 2014 Fall athletic teams have been recognized by the Iowa High School Athletic Association and the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union for their academic achievements.  The Distinguished Academic Achievement Award is given to the teams who achieve a combined grade point average of 3.

Shellsburg American Legion Riders help veterans in variety of ways

The Shellsburg American Legion Riders recently made several donations to help area vets. The Shellsburg American Legion Riders made a very generous donation of $750 to be used for assisting area veterans. This followed another wonderful gift of $650 that was given in November to purchase gift certificates to Fareway for food and provisions for our Veterans. With that $650 there were five $100 gift cards purchased and one $150 gift card purchased.

Always the Chief: In Memory of Dave Hite

Firefighters will join mourners paying their last respects to former Fire Chief Dave Hite, Dec. 29. Despite the illness that robbed him of his health and forced his early retirement from both his job in the insurance business and his roles on the Vinton Fire Department, Dave Hite continued to earn the respect and admiration of his former fellow fighters until the very end. That end came on Sunday, Dec. 21, when Dave passed away at the Virginia Gay Hospital Nursing and Rehab Center after his long battle with ALS.

Suspects charged in Evergreen Cemetery vandalism case

After several months investigating a heartless and disrespectful act of vandalism, charges have been filed on five suspects from the Cedar Rapids area for the vandalism at the Evergreen Cemetery back in the early hours on September 14, 2014: Johnathan Fay, 24, Arianna Devereux, 19, Daniel Anderson, 26, Christian Severson, 20, and Jesse Clark, 22, all of Cedar Rapids.

Anonymous donor gives $31,000 toward BC Nature Center

Although Christmas may not be 'white' this year, a generous gift made it merry for BC Conservation. The Benton County Conservation Foundation has received a $31,000 donation from an anonymous donor. The Benton County Conservation Foundation wishes to thank this donor for their commitment to the future of conservation. This is one of the larger gifts the foundation has received to date. This donor has a long-standing commitment to the outdoors as a hunter and outdoor enthusiast, which led them donate to the Benton County Conservation Foundation.

Senate passes Charitable Rollover; donations could add to tax benefits

The Community Foundation of Eastern Iowa, which works with the several local organizations on funding efforts, is spreading the news that recently-passed legislation could help add more tax benefits to those who make donations yet this year.  The U.S. Senate passed a bill that awaits the president's signature to extend the IRA Charitable Rollover for 2014.

Shellsburg man injured in accident near site of brother's fatal 2011 wreck

The Benton County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a single vehicles accident  on Thursday, Dec. 18, at approximately 3 p.m.   According to the Benton County Sheriff's Office, Russell Ray Bos, 35 from Shellsburg, was driving northbound in the 6100 block of 32nd Ave., three miles north of Shellsburg when he lost control of his 2005 Chevy Avalanche.

Koopman light display continues northwest of Vinton

It's not a secret! Santa welcomes visitors to Koopman's light display again, in its 50th year! As Heidi Koopman marks the 50th year since her father, Larry Kersten, first put a moving decorated light in their yard on the Mount Auburn Blacktop, the light display looks as fresh as ever. We took some close-up photos of many of the lights and mechanical displays a few weeks ago.  To get to the lights, travel north on 218, then turn right on V61 (Mount Auburn Blacktop) and travel about 4 miles.
