Area business learn safe alcohol serving tips at training sessions

The Benton County Above the Influence Coalition hosted three separate Training for Intervention ProcedureS (TIPS) sessions during the month of March as part of the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPF SIG) which is funded to ASAC by the Iowa Department of Public Health, through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) of the U.

Post-Prom plans continue; volunteers needed

VSHS Junior Parents, this is what we've (well, the kids) have been waiting for...POST PROM!!! The night really is a lot of fun, but we need your help! We need volunteers to host the games & activities for the kids. You do NOT need to be a professional athlete, artist or game show host. Just be ready to have some FUN and LAUGH!!! There are game descriptions on the Post Prom website, so you can decide what you'd like to do; then grab a friend and signup on the Games & Activity Sign-up Sheet.

Jorgensens named Master Farmers by Wallaces Farmer magazine

Master Farmers: Ann and Marlyn Jorgensen are among most recent 'Wallaces Farmer' honorees. Marlyn and Ann Jorgensen, of Garrison, have been named Iowa Master Farmers by Wallaces Farmer magazine. They are among four Iowa farm families that were recognized during ceremonies in West Des Moines on March 19. The other families are Roy and Phyllis Bardole, of Rippey; Brian and Cindy Kemp, of Sibley; and Gene and Marita Rouse, of Huxley.

VSMS honors Students of the Trimester‏

The Students of the Trimester honor recognizes students of Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School for their character and citizenship, as well as their work in the classroom.  Students of the trimester are selected by the teachers for demonstrating Viking Spirit ( being respectful, responsible, and safe) along with academic achievement for that student.

VU leaders review 2013; look forward to 2014 during annual meeting

When Director Nathan Hesson and Vinton Unlimited members and directors met earlier this month, they reflected on a year of activities in 2013, and looked forward to many more exciting adventures in 2014.  VU Board President Jon Clingman began the event by playing a video honoring local "Champions" for their work in the community and business.

CPR Class Held; First Aid Course set for March 29th

Ten area people met over the weekend to certify or be re-certified in CPR, (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and AED use, (automated external defibrillator.)   Instructors were Dan Johnson and Elana Janss-Johnson, paramedics from Belle Plaine Ambulance Service. Dan is also the head of Benton County Emergency Medical Services.   Dan and Elana feel it is good to offer courses like this because, “We are in a rural setting.

Classroom gardens: Elwick growing vegetables year-round with hydroponic system

Here are a few of the variety of lettuce plants Mike Elwick grows in hydroponic trays. While most of his neighbors trudged to work in the cold and snow all winter, Mike Elwick spent his working days surrounded by growing plants and an office kept at 70 degrees without a single heater.  And he did that without leaving town.  Those were among the benefits of Elwick's first winter of running an indoor hydroponics garden at The Old School Produce.

Moooo-vin' on up to the east side...of town

Hey diddle diddle, the cat and the fiddle the cow jumped...out of the trailer? Saturday brought a change of scenery to a few of the Vinton residents, and to one cow. This cow escaped from the ride through town and took a brief tour along 2nd Avenue. Yes, it' small town Iowa! Photos were captured by Alyssa Smith. Thanks Alyssa!

VSHS leaders begin public fund-raising campaign for athletic field turf project

VSHS leaders hope fund-raising efforts will make the turf project a reality this summer. Vinton-Shellsburg High School Football Coach Jim Womochil told the audience at his first meeting two years ago that one of his five-year goals was to replace the grass turf of football field with an artificial turf that soccer and other school teams and classes could use. Now, Womochil and other VSHS  leaders are hoping a local fund-raising effort will make that field a reality this year.
