School Board election today; meet the VS candidates
Vinton-Shellsurg voters will go to the polls on Tuesday, from noon to 8 p.m. at the courthouse in Vinton, the Shellsburg Legion Hall and the Garrison Emergency Services Building.
Below is a list of the candidates for each seat, with a link to information submitted by each:
District 1: Mike Timmermans is running unopposed.

At-large, to fill vacancy: Kyle Schminke, Marcia Booth and Kathy Van Steenhuyse are the candidates for the vacancy left by the resignation of Tim Bird.

Veterans Night at Benton County Speedway Sept. 15; free admission for vets
The Benton County Speedway will offer a Salute to Veterans during the races on Sunday, Sept. 15. Admission will be free for veterans, who will also parade around the race track before the races begin.
All area veterans are invited to attend, and to wear their military uniforms, if they wish to do so. Please RSVP to Janice Smith at 319-939-8325.

Vinton-Shellsburg School Board Candidate Profile: Rob Levis
Editor's Note: Rob Levis is seeking re-election to the at-large school board seat he was first elected to in 2009. We asked Rob to share some information about himself and her experience, as well as his views on school issues. Below, is his response:
For the past four years I have had the privilege of serving our district as a member of the Vinton-Shellsburg School Board.
Permit to Carry courses to be offered in Vinton
A course for Iowans to obtain their Permit to Carry Weapons has been scheduled in the area. The four hour course covers handgun safety, gun handling, carry options, situational awareness, interaction with law enforcement, use of force, and state and federal laws. The course teaches students how to be safe and efficient with a firearm for personal protection.

VS Fine Arts Century Club announces annual meeting
