Norton shares inspirational story of recovery at Fields of Faith event

For the seventh consecutive year a Fields of Faith event was held in La Porte City.   An estimated crowd of over 700 gathered on the Union football field to hear messages from young champions in the surrounding area.  Special guest Chris Norton gave an inspirational message about his response to what happened to him when he received a spinal cord injury during a football kickoff at Luther College in 2010.

Reality Check: New name for VSHS student group

We have been called many things before, but now, we are hoping that this name will stick to us. Over the last few years of me being in high school, my freshmen year there was only 2 members, sophomore year there was 4 steady members, and we did a couple out of town activities.

'Skull in the Ashes;' Author of local crime history book to visit Vinton Oct. 3

On a February night in 1897, the general store in Walford, Iowa, burned down. The next morning, townspeople discovered a charred corpse in the ashes. Everyone knew that the store’s owner, Frank Novak, had been sleeping in the store as a safeguard against burglars. Now all that remained were a few of his personal items scattered under the body.

IFA convention wrap-up: GFD and VFD thank city, citizens

USDA offices closed due to federal government shutdown

A sign taped to the door of the USDA building indicates the offices are closed, due to shutdown. The United States Department of Agriculture building in Vinton is closed today, as a result of the government shutdown that began at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday.  The offices were locked this morning; a sign taped to the door announced the closing. No one answered the phone.  Other government offices continued to remain open. The post office is not directly funded by tax dollars, so is not affected.

Benton County Republicans Monthly Meeting Tonight in Vinton

Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive set for Saturday, Sunday

It's time again for the Vinton Knights of Columbus Persons with Intellectual Disabilities Drive, better known as the TOOTSIE ROLL DRIVE. SATURDAY, Sept. 28, the Knights will be stationed outside the Vinton Fareway store from 8 to 8, from 10 to 2 at Roy's in Shellsburg, and from 8 to 4 at Theisen's. On SUNDAY, Sept. 29, they will be at Theisen's from 10 to 4.

Second cousins Jacob Isbell, Luke Moen named National Merit semi-finalists

Jacob Isbell and Luke Moen are among 16,000 National Merit Scholarship semi-finalists. Last year, approximately 1.5 million of the top students planning to graduate in 2014 took the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. A little more than 1 percent of those – 16,000 – have been named semi-finalists. Those 16,000 top-scorers include two students from Vinton-Shellsburg: Second cousins Jacob Isbell and Luke Moen.
