A Note to BCVP Volunteers
The Volunteers of the Benton County Volunteer Program who are taking part in the Annual Pre-Christmas Fundraiser, selling nuts, are to contact the office as soon as possible. The whole cashew and pecans are in and read for pick up and distribition. Questions please call 472-2830
Holiday Express train ride brings hundreds to Vinton, Palo
Hundreds of people from eastern Iowa and beyond rode the Holiday Express between Vinton and Palo on Saturday. In Vinton, they arrived at the old Illinois Northern Depot, where a shuttle was available to take them to several locations to visit and shop throughout Vinton. The event raised funds for the United Way while also bringing many shoppers and visitors to the two cities on Saturday.
Explaining the computer communication gap
It is difficult, at times, to explain how computers work, and why they don't. As computer users, most of us only know that it's exasperating when we do everything the computer (and computer experts) tell us to do, and still our computer does not do what we expect.
We have been experiencing a variety of these headaches as we moved our web site to a larger server.
Three hurt in Highway 30 crash near Watkins Friday morning
Three people were injured in a crash on Highway 30 Friday morning.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, a 1997 Malibu driven by Keaton Miller, 17, of Blairstown, was northbound on County Road W12 north of Watkins. The driver failed to stop at the stop sign, and the car entered Highway 30, where it was hit broadside by a eastbound 2008 Dodge Caravan minivan driven by Patricia Thompson of Van Horne.
Brandon celebrates Christmas
The annual Brandon Christmas celebration began Friday night and continues Saturday evening.
Wagon rides, photos with Santa, and a silent auction for wreaths and gift baskets are all part of the annual tradition.

Winner announced in VFW drawing
The VFW Post 8884 of Vinton held their gift card drawing on Friday, November 11, 2011. Members gathered at the Fareway store in Vinton.
Jeanette Newton was chosen to draw a winner by John Guiltier, organizer of the fundraiser for the VFW. Marion Lamphier of Urbana was the lucky winner of the Fareway gift card worth $100.

New Phone App Will Help Stranded Winter Motorists
A new smartphone application from the North Dakota State University Extension Service will help motorists stuck in winter weather says Linda Fischer, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Regional Extension Education Director.
The Winter Survival Kit app can be as critical as a physical winter survival kit if you find yourself stuck or stranded in severe winter weather conditions, says Bob Bertsch, NDSU Agriculture Communication Web technology specialist.
Betterton moving to new building next week; massage therapy to begin Dec. 13
A year ago, Matt Betterton and Scott Barron unveiled the floor plans for the new Betterton Chiropractic Center, at a Vinton Unlimited After 5 Event.
That event took place in December 2010, at the US Bank Community Room, because there is not enough room at the current office on A Avenue.
But Matt and Scott and Betterton staff are preparing to move into the new (and much larger) facility on West 13th Street (behind First Christian Church and across the street from the south entrance of Theisen's).
4th grade students sing about a 'Journey Around the World'

Vinton fourth grade students performed their annual concert Thursday evening in the Tilford Auditorium, singing a variety of songs in a variety of languages.
The students, directed and accompanied by Mrs. Lois Martin, sang and played instruments for songs from Old England, Ghana, Ireland, Israel, Canada, Germany, France, Turkey and Korea, ending with a medley of American songs.
GARRISON FIRE AND FIRST RESPONDER TRUCKS RETURN TO QUARTERS
Garrison Firefighters and First Responders backed their trucks into the Garrison Emergency Services Building the evening of Thursday, December 1.
After they were pulled or driven out of the wreckage of the building following the Derecho Wind Disaster at 5 am July 11 they have been housed in a machine shed owned by Terry Henkle, 1 mile northwest of Garrison.
