Tree Walk bidding deadline 5 p.m. tonight

This 'Vegas' tree has the highest bid so far in the VGH Tree Walk.      The "Vegas" tree donate by Jen Northrup so far has the highest bid in the 2011 Virginia Gay Hospital Tree Walk.       Jen's tree also comes with gift certificates for overnight stays and meals donated by three of Iowa's casino/hotels.     Bidding on the more than 20 trees, wreaths and baby afghan baskets continues until 5 p.

'Showcase' publication to focus on linking Vinton retailers, customers

A setting in which anything may be displayed to best advantage      The definition of "showcase" above describes the goal that VU Director Nathan Hesson and Monkeytown owner Kurt Karr had in mind when they created the new publication, which began arriving in Vinton area mailboxes Thursday.     Showcase includes several stories about local businesses and events, as well as information about this weekend's Holiday Open House.

Lighted Veterans Christmas Parade takes place Thursday evening

     The Veteran’s Lighted PATRIOTIC Christmas Parade, will take place again this year in Vinton, just before the first arrival of Santa for the holiday season. Line up begins at 5:30 p.m.Thursday Evening, Nov. 17, east and south of the Methodist Church, on 6th Street and Second Avenue. The parade begins at  6. The VFW, American Legion and AMVETS organizations of Vinton are sponsoring the event.

Holiday Train Ride Returns Due to Popular Demand

  A special holiday train ride will take holiday travelers between Palo and Vinton again this winter season. On Saturday, December 3 families and friends are invited to board Iowa Northern Railway Company’s Hawkeye Express for a special, one-day fundraising event, known as the Palo Holiday Express, to benefit the United Way of East Central Iowa.

Great American Smoke-Out: Kits offered to those trying to quit

The Great American Smoke-Out is Thursday, Nov. 17; survival kits are available.        Thursday, Nov. 17, is the annual Great American Smoke-Out (GASO).      In order to provide assistance to those trying to quit, the Benton County Area Substance Abuse Council (ASAC) office in Vinton is offering “Survivor’s Kits” for free to those who want to go a day without cigarettes.

Family escapes from fire with help from officer, ambulance crewman

Officer Josh West and Tony Thompson of the NBA service saved a family from a fire at this house.       Electrical workers and cleaning crews are busy today at 704 Second Avenue in Vinton, where a fire Sunday morning caused significant damage.      But thanks to a Vinton police officer and North Benton Ambulance Service first responder, the Scott and Ronnetta Slager family only has to deal with the loss of property (and a pet), instead of serious injury or perhaps death to themselves.
