V-S Board ponders future of its IASB involvement
The recent scandals involving the Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB) has left many school districts pondering whether to continue their membership in the organization.
The board had planned to discuss its IASB membership in June, but tabled the issue until July.
Superintendent Mary Jo Hainstock said that there have been significant financial benefits for the district because of its IASB membership, although the future of those benefits is uncertain.
VSHS Band celebrates July 4 in DC; marches in annual parade
With crowds lining both sides of Constitution Avenue ahead of them, and a giant Fred Flinstone balloon behind them, the members of the Vinton-Shellsburg Marching Band celebrated Independence Day by marching in the July 4 parade in Washington, D.C.
The band members will continue their visit to the Nation's Capital today and return to Vinton tomorrow.
VSHS Band visits Arlington Cemetery
The Vinton Shellsburg High School Band was honored to be chosen to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Those representing the band by laying the wreath were Wes Lyons, John Levis, Nick Gardner and Ashley Mckenna. The wreath placed near the famous tombstone had Vinton-Shellsburg High School Band written on the ribbon.

VSHS Band tours DC; prepares for parade tomorrow
Vinton-Shellsburg band members have seen the outside of the White House, as well as other famous DC landmarks. They visited the Vietnam Memorial on Saturday after arriving in the Nation's Capital for the July 4 Parade, in which they will represent Iowa.

Garrison fires 'suspicious;' fire marshal investigating
Two fires in Garrison that occurred within minutes of each other Thursday have been described as "suspicious." An officer from the Iowa Fire Marshal's Office inspected two structures Thursday afternoon, and will present a report in the near future.
Garrison Fire Chief Steve Meyer said the fires occurred at 206 Beech Street, near the Garrison City Park, and at 404 West Maple.

Vinton church group plans mission trip to orphanage in Guatemala
Several members of Blessed Hope Church of Vinton will be traveling to Guatemala early in July to help Iowa missionaries at an orphanage there.
"Ten of us are going, including Pastor Jim and Karen Blair," said Kristi Lutz, one of the volunteers who will leave on July 3. "We are going to New Life Children's Home in Villa Nueva, There is also a school that is linked to this home (orphanage).
New LEC in full use; prisoners staying and working there now
The new Benton County Law Enforcement Center is now in full use; the prisoners have been moved from the temporary jail at the former Lincoln Elementary building into the new prison. (The cells were actually located in what used to be the principal's office.) Some of the inmates have been assigned work detail; one of them was working on the lawn and sprinkler area Wednesday morning.
