Henkle Creek Mercantile Shows their style at Vinton Lutheran Home

Lutheran Home residents enjoyed and participated in a fashion show. Henkle Creek Mercantile held a Spring Style Show at the Vinton Lutheran Home Assisted Living Apartments on Tuesday March 29th. Diane Harris and Marge Wessling modeled several outfits each, while Karilea Ries and Linda led a discussion about the clothing and other merchandise that Henkle Creek carries.  Those who attended enjoyed refreshments and also had a chance to purchase items they were interested in.

AmeriCorps NCCC Repairs Homes in Indiana

Kevin removing a base board.   By: Kristy Hawes   AmeriCorps NCCC team, Oak Seven, is rebuilding homes in Northwest Indiana. The team is working with LARRI, Lake Area Regional Recovery of Indiana to rebuild homes damaged in the 2008 floods. Although, it has been a few years since the floods, there are many homes that still remain damaged. From March 17 to April 29, Oak Seven is repairing multiple homes in the region.

Home and Garden Show draws many to VSHS

The Benton County Volunteer Coop was one of many organizations with booths at the Home Show.     A variety of area businesses set up displays for the second annual Home and Garden Show organzied by Kurt's Enterprises. Many businesses that offer products or services for the home had displays, and offered prizes. Banks, contractors, real estate offices and others featured items for indoor or outdoor use. 

Vinton's newest published author Stephonie Williams meets readers

Vinton author Stephonie Williams signed books for readers Saturday at Clingman Pharmacy.      Stephonie Williams met with readers Saturday morning at Clingman Pharmacy, where she signed books as she promoted her first effort as an author.     Williams, of VInton, co-wrote "Mark of Royalty" with her sister, Jennifer Clark of Utah. The book tells the story of Sarah, who as the first born, received the Mark of Royalty from her family.

State Fair seeks nominations for 'Way We Live' farm family award

     The Iowa State Fair, Tractor Supply Co. and WHO News Radio 1040 are searching for six farm families to recognize with the Way We Live Award at the 2011 Fair, August 11-21. These families must exemplify farm values derived from hard work and a love for the occupation of farming.      To enter, submit an entry form along with a 500-1500 word essay describing how living on a farm and choosing the occupation of farming has shaped the family's life.

Area man killed in one-vehicle accident

       Rory Everett Bos, 26, of Shellsburg died early Sunday morning in an accident north of Shellsburg.      According to the Benton County Sheriff's Office, Bos was driving a 1999 GMC Sierra was southbound on 32nd Avenue about three miles north of Shellsburg when it veered into a ditch embankment shortly after 2 a.

'Spoofing' Phone calls becoming an issue for Vinton Residents

  The Vinton Police Department has been receiving an increasing number of calls and complaints about "Spoofing" phone calls, usually from Telemarketers, in the Vinton area recently.   "Spoofing" is a general term used when telemarketers use technology to "spoof" the recipient of a phone call into believing the call is coming from someone locally.

Vietnam vet Geiger organizes 'Welcome Home' events Wednesday

Iowa WWII vets visit Vietnam Memorial in 2010; local events will honor Vietnam vets Wednesday.       Ron Geiger was in Vietnam in April of 1971, when his military commanders told him he had to hurry home. His father had died.      Geiger arrived at the Seattle-Tacoma Airport, wearing his jungle fatigues.      A man with long hair and an angry look saw the soldier in his uniform and headed toward him.

  Vinton Unlimited has been making some exciting changes and improvements lately.
