Cordes was the last to know he was winner of Frostbuster Modified feature

Troy Cordes, with family and crew, went to Victory lane after the Frostbuster Modified feature. The finish to Thursday’s Frostbuster feature for IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modifieds at Benton County Speedway was so close Troy Cordes didn’t know for sure he was the winner until he heard it over his one-way radio. Cordes led most of the 25-lapper after passing Todd Shute following an early restart. He couldn’t find a way around two cars at the back of the field, however, and both Shute and Hunter Marriott caught up in a hurry.

Vikettes medal in many events at Union Early Bird

LaDorshae Mull runs the 100M for the Vikettes; she also ran on two relay teams The Vinton-Shellsburg girls track team competed with several other schools at the Early Bird track meet at Union High School in La Porte City on Thursday. While no official team scoring took place, the Vikettes did very well, placing in the top 3 in 12 events. Those winning for the Vikettes included Bristi Gerber in the 800M run. The Vikettes swept that event, as Lily Horst came in 2nd and Annika Schmidt, 3rd.

Vikings take second in Early Bird meet

Matthew Andreesen runs the 400 hurdles for the Vikings. The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings finally had good weather for the Early Bird track meet, and finished second in Tuesday’s event. Winners for VS included Tyler Bartz, 400M and long jump; Derek Dinderman, 800M and 3200M; and the 4 x 100 relay team. Last year, the event was delayed, and then canceled, because of cold weather.  See complete results HERE.

Gable to hold reading of new book at VSHS today

Iowa wrestling legend Dan Gable will visit Vinton today. Gable will read from his book, "A Wrestling Life," at at Vinton-Shellsburg High School. He will also speak to VSHS students.  Coach Gable will be speaking to students this afternoon beginning around 2:15.  He will begin signing books for the public around 3:30 in the high school commons.

Bowling Hall of Fame officially adds Steve Berry

Steve Berry, with his family, officially joined the Iowa Bowling Hall of Fame today. Steve Berry, accompanied by his wife, Rachelle, daughters Taylor and Steph, and sister Carlyn, officially joined the Iowa Bowling Hall of Fame, joining those who are honored for their bowling ability.  Steve celebrated this great achievement with his family, friends, his fellow teammates and some of his youth bowlers.  Steve's mentor and youth coach (who is 100 years old) was also available to celebrate with him today.

VSBC softball team seeks players in 2-4th grades

VSBC (Marv Lindsey League) is looking for 2nd, 3rd and 4th grade girls to complete our teams for this summer.   The teams will participate in the CPU league which will consist of 12-14 game in late May and June.  This is a great beginner league where the girls will learn the basics of softball.  Player fee is $75 plus jersey.  Please contact VSBC at vintonsbcorp@hotmail.

Ken Schrader to join IMCA Modifieds at April 2 Frostbuster in Vinton

VINTON – Ken Schrader plans to join the IMCA Modified field for the Thursday, April 2 Frostbuster special at Benton County Speedway.  The popular NASCAR driver, along with top IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified regulars from across the Midwest, will chase a top prize of $1,000. Also on the card at Vinton are IMCA Sunoco Stock Cars running for $500 to win, Karl Chevrolet North­ern SportMods for $400 to win and IMCA Sunoco Hobby Stocks for $250 to win.

Spring Sports Schedule: Viking Early Bird Track Meet set for March 31

The Vinton-Shellsburg boys Early Bird Track Meet is scheduled for Tuesday, March 31. Last year's event was delayed, and then canceled, because of cold spring weather in March and April of 2014.  School officials hope for warmer weather this year as the spring sports season begins. Along with boys and girls track, boys and girls soccer, the Red Cedar Shooters trap team, and boys and girls golf teams have many events scheduled for April and May.

North Eden Willing Workers play in 4H volleyball tourney

The North Eden Willing Workers 4H club had a junior team participate in the annual 4H volleyball tournament on March 15, 2015.  The members who participated were  Front row Morgan Lang, Sophia Kreutner; back left to right, Carli Lang, Kate Hyland,  Tess Lillibridge, Samantha Walton, and Anna Becker.

Jr./Sr. League/Zippy Midgets wrap up season with Total Pin Tourney

Zippy Midgets: First Place:  Turkeys (Parker Arnold, Gavin Salger, Matthew Bookmeier, Emily Johnson) This year the Jr/Sr league bowlers wrapped up their season with Boy/Girl Total Pin tournament. The kids bowled three games and after they added in their handicap the bowler with the highest score were:  Ben Wood and Taylor Berry. Great job bowling today!!  Team Placings: First Place:  Legends (Ben Wood, Josh Staab, Ethan Dedrick and Jordan Schoettmer (second picture) Second Place:  Alley Dawgs (Keegan McKibben, Tyler Rasmussen, Bradley Vileta, Bryce Myers)   Most Improved:  Tyler Rasmussen, Taylor Berry    High Average:    Jacob Gosse, Alyssa Bunge High Game:   Josh Staab, Connie Upmeyer High Series:  Ben Wood, Taylor Berry Zippy Midgets   Thhe Zippy Midget bowlers also wrapped up their season with Boy/Girl Total Pin tournament.
