Viking swimmers take on big schools at C.R. Washington

Nine schools, fourteen teams and nearly 200 swimmers.  Tuesday night at Cedar Rapids Washington the Vinton-Shellsburg swimmers had the opportunity to swim with the big schools and came up big.  The Vikes, facing a field comprised of all Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) Schools, managed a very respectable ninth place defeating teams that included CR Jefferson and Dubuque Hempstead.

Viking swimmers split with Decorah, Waterloo East

Another tight meet for the Viking swimmers resulted in another come from behind victory to secure a split Tuesday night in Waterloo against host Waterloo East and Decorah.  The Vikings edged the East Trojans 85 to 82 while falling to Decorah 134 -35.  Top overall finishers for Vinton-Shellsburg were Matt Upmeyer with a 2nd in the 50 Free and 4th in the 100 Back.

Wehage earns 100th win as Vikes wrestle at Anamosa

Max Wehage earned his 100th win (and another pin) at the Anamosa duals. The Vinton-Shellsburg wrestling team competed at the Anamosa Duals on Saturday, where they won 55-24 over Cascade, but lost 48-27 to Waterloo Columbus.  A highlight of the weekend was the 100th win for Max Wehage. The 132-pounder won two decisions. Other Vikings with two wins on Saturday include Nick Hyland, Michael Neal,Warren Rouse,Steve Henry and Tevin Null.

Parents Night: Viking wrestlers host Maquoketa, Solon and Marion

Warren Rouse won this match vs. the Maquoketa 182-pounder. The VS wrestling team honored parents and seniors during Thursday's dual event which included Marion, Solon and Maquoketa. Slow start, Mustang 3s doom Vikings in 65-56 loss

The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings played well enough over three quarters to defeat Independence in an away game on Tuesday.  But a dreadfully poor start by the Vikes and spectacular 3-point shooting by a Mustang junior made the difference. V-S fell behind 9-1 and ended the first quarter with a 5-15 deficit. They were able to cut the Mustang lead to 2 a couple of times in the second half, but lost the Wamac Conference contest, 65-56.

Hyland scores 100th win at Starmont Duals

Viking Nick Hyland celebrated his 100th wrestling win Saturday at Starmont. Junior Viking wrestler Nick Hyland earned his 100th high school career win on Saturday, as he wrestled with the Vikings at the Starmont Duals event. Hyland wrestles this year at 138 lbs. During this event, the Vikings competed in duals against Dike-New Hartford, Starmont and New Hampton. Hyland scored a win by decision, a fall and a forfeit on Saturday to reach the milestone.

Baseball/Softball registration set for Sunday at Tilford

2015 registration for VSBC/Marv Lindsey Softball and Baseball will be this Sunday at Tilford Elementary.  3rd/4th/5th/6th grade softball will be held at 4:00 pm, 10U/9U baseball at 4:45 pm and 12U/11U baseball at 5:15.  More information regarding cost and paperwork needed can be found on our website - www.eteamz.com/vintonbaseballsoftball.

Viking swimmers win big on Senior Night

Kyle Schmemmel nears the last lap of his 500-yard Freestyle event. A standing room only crowd, senior night and a tight, competitive meet.  Thursday night the fans of Viking swimming were treated to a great show as Vinton-Shellsburg faced Waterloo East at the Braille School pool. In a meet that couldn’t have been much closer the Vikings came through in the clutch to pull out a 49-45 victory.  During the eleven-event meet neither team led at any time by more than 4 points.

Big night propels Viking swimmers to dual meet split; Senior Night meet today

There must be something in the water in Grinnell.  For the second time in the past month the Viking swimmers had a hugely successful performance at the Grinnell College pool.  Facing host Grinnell and Oskaloosa in a double dual Tuesday night, the Vikings split the meets falling to Grinnell 109 - 54 while defeating Oskaloosa 76-65.  But the big story of the night was the tremendous improvement the team registered across the entire lineup as the Vikes clocked 26 new personal best times to include some significant time drops by a number of swimmers and in a pair of relays.
