Vikes crown four champs, win team title at Monticello wrestling tournament

Nick Hyland, Michael Neal, Steve Henry and Carter Weeks were tourney champs; VS claimed team title. Vinton-Shellsburg wrestlers won the Dan Guilford Tournament in Monticello on Dec. 6. Carter Weeks, Nick Hyland, Michael Neal, and Stevie Henry were individual champions. The Vikings are coached by James Locke, Hank Bratten, and Phillip Miller. Love of coaching brings retired superintendent Healy to V-S BB program

Vikette BB Coach Mike Healy works with seniors Brea Burroughs and Chelsea Mier on a 1-on-1 drill. Mike Healy says that in his retirement, he is only going to do “things that I love.” And among the things he loves most is something he did when he began his career in education more than 40 years ago – coaching basketball. Healy retired from his position as superintendent of the Bellevue school district at the end of the 2013-14 school year.

Prep Basketball: Vikings begin season tonight; girls look for first win

The Vinton-Shellsburg High School basketball teams are both in action tonight, as the Vikings host Dyersville Beckman in their season opener. The Vikettes travel to Beckman tonight then host West Delaware, which is led by former Vikette Coach Harold Shepherd, on Friday.  Junior Maci Griffith led the Vikettes in their season opener last week, scoring 19 in the 57-50 loss to Anamosa last week.

Girls win VSHS bowling opener; boys fall just 14 pins short

Cole Garwood led the varsity boys with a 371 while Taylor Berry's 335 led the VS girls varsity bowling team in its opening competition last week. The varsity girls won; the boys lost a close contest. Coach's Summary:  This is the first match of our season and I am very proud of these teams.  As you know, Berry's Lanes has gone through some changes and replaced the lanes recently, and our teams have only had one full practice on them.

Did you know this about the American Legion: Junior Shooting Sports Program

The American Legion Junior Shooting Sports Program encourages marksmanship and gun safety education for children ages 12 to 18. The American Legion of Iowa Junior Shooting Sports teams are given the opportunity to participate in TWO tournament level matches: A Department shoulder-to-shoulder match, and the National postal match. Both competitions follow the National Standard Three-Position Air Rifle rules.

Hallberg chosen for 2014 All-USCAA Football Team

The USCAA has announced their 2014 All-USCAA Football Team.  Iowa Wesleyan was well represented on the list with 15 players being selected. The Tigers had six players named to the First Team Offense All-USCAA Football Team. IW also 5 players earn First Team Defensive honors, and one player named to the First Team Special Teams list.

Wrestlers to welcome new Viking wrestling coach Locke at Tuesday potluck

James Locke works with younger wrestlers at a club clinic in 2013; his is the new VHSH coach. The Vinton-Shellsburg Wrestling Club is hosting a potluck on Tuesday, November 25 at 6:00 in the Tilford Lunchroom to get to know our new head High School Wrestling Coach, James Locke. Former Viking wrestlers Hank Bratten and Phillip Miller will share the assistant head coach position.  All wrestling families are welcome to attend.  Please bring your own table service, drink, and a dish or two to share.

Hole in one for local man

On Monday, November 10th, 74 year old Rich Bednar got his first hole in one. He aced the 5th hole at the Vinton Country Club from the back tee box using a 5 wood from 180 yards out.  Playing partners Ted Mann, Gary Marlow, Dean Schminke and Steve Stulken witnessed the hole in one. Congratulations Rich!

Since 1925, American Legion Baseball has contributed to the development of good sportsmanship and good citizenship while providing wholesome recreation for the nation's youth. In Iowa, players between the ages of 13 and 19 are divided into two categories, Senior and Junior. Seniors are primarily 18 or 19 but younger players who have shown they can play with the Seniors are included.
