Cross Country: VSMS boys win at Benton; Dinderman, Horst lead varsity runners

Nolan Haisman won the middle school boys race at the Benton XC meet. Nolan Haisman was the top winner from Vinton-Shellsburg during the Bobcat Invitational cross country meet on Saturday. Haisman, and 8th-grader, won the middle school boys race by 30 seconds over the second place finisher. VSMS runners also finished in the third through sixth place slots during the event.  In high school races, Derek Dinderman was third in the varsity boys race; Lily Horst finished fourth in the varsity girls.

Charles City ruins Vikings' District opener, 36-10

Viking defenders try to bring down a Comet runner during Friday's loss to Charles City. Nobody named Murphy was on the roster during the Vinton-Shellsburg district football opener against Charles City, but Murphy's law seemed to rule over the Vikings in a 36-10 loss in the first contest between the two schools in many years. Just about everything went wrong for the Vikings, where missed tackles and penalties on 4th downs helped keep Comet drives alive.

Volleyball: Williamsburg edges Vikettes, 3-2

Benton loses to Dewitt Central; prepares for Ballard in district opener

Meet the Vikings' newest football opponent: The Charles City Comets

Charles City and the Comets will introduce themselves to VS players and fans this Friday. When the Charles City football players board their bus outside the school at 1 Comet Drive for the 88-mile journey to the Karr Athletic Complex, they will be introducing to the Vinton-Shellsburg district and community a city much like their own. Under the new football district alignment, V-S will play Charles City in the first district contest of the season this year and next.

Prep volleyball: Vikettes improve to 6-4 after weekend home tournament

The Vikettes defeted Hampton-Dumont and Highland, but lost to Janesville and West Delaware, all by scores of 2-0.  The Vikettes host Williamsburg on Tuesday. See more photos HERE. Vikings find positives, areas to improve, in disappointing loss to S. Tama

It was clear in the locker room, said Vinton-Shellsburg football coach Jim Womochil, that losing to South Tama -- even though the Trojans had entered Friday's game ranked 14th in Class 2A -- was not acceptable to his players. Standing outside that locker room after his team's 17-14 loss Friday night, Womochil gestured toward the facility and said, "In there I saw tears.

Former Vikings Hallberg, Tranel ready for start of college football season

Troy Hallberg poses with his grandparents at Iowa Wesleyan; he will start at tackle for the Tigers. Two former Vinton-Shellburg stand-outs are preparing for the upcoming college football season which starts tomorrow. Troy Hallberg, a senior lineman at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant, will suit up in the purple jersey with the number 61, starting at tackle, when the Tigers host Simpson College at 1 p.m. tomorrow. "The team is looking good, but there is still room for improvement," says Hallberg, the son of Greg and Kriss Hallberg of rural Vinton.

Rough road ahead: Vikings face ranked opponents in first three away games

The 2014 Vikings line up for the Star Spangled Banner before the first game of the season. The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings 2014 football season includes a long and challenging road schedule. The first three of the Vikings four away games are against ranked opponents. The road trips begin this Friday, as the Vikings travel to South Tama. Although they won just three games last year, the Trojans are much improved, says Viking coach Jim Womochil.

VS girls second, boys fourth, at Williamsburg cross country meet

The VS varsity girls hold the runner-up plaque after placing 2nd at Williamsburg. Lily Horst and Derek Dinderman again led Vinton-Shellsburg cross country runners during Tuesday's meet in Williamsburg.  Each placed third in their varsity races.
