The Vinton-Shellsburg High School softball team came literally within an inch of tying the Independence Mustangs in Tuesday's regional softball action.
The Vikettes lost, 5-4, and came within an inch -- or less-- of scoring what would have been the tying run, when pinch-runner Hannah Kalous was thrown out at home plate; the catcher had dropped the ball, but quickly picked it up and tagged her again while blocking home plate.

Tyler Stueck of Vinton competed in a PGA Tournament Qualifier at Twin Pines in Cedar Rapids on July 7th. Stueck placed 1st shooting a 1 over par carding a 73. By placing 1st, he qualifies for The State Junior PGA Tournament which will be held at Lake Panorama.

It’s billed as the most anticipated event of the year at Benton County Speedway and the 20th annual Hogan Memorial is a good bet to be just that.
The Sunday, July 13 IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified main event pays $1,250 to win, another $50 for each of the 40 laps led, plus $250 to the leader at midway.

After a one-run loss in a game with a handful of defensive miscues, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings came back to defeat Benton Community, 12-2 in high school baseball action Monday in Vinton.
In the first game, senior pitcher Luke Moen gave up only four hits but six walks and defensive miscues led to six unearned runs for the Bobcats in the first five innings.

Twin Pines golf course in Cedar Rapids held there event on June 16th. There were 32 kids in the 15-18 year olds age division, including some Vinton-Shellsburg golfers. Tyler Stueck finished one stroke back from the leader with a 1 over par 73 and a 2nd place finish. Daniel Janssen finished in 4th place with a 76.
Gardner golf course in Marion held its event on June 23rd.

IOWA CITY -- Vinton native Desi Druschel has been named the University of Iowa baseball program's director of operations and director of Iowa baseball camps, UI head coach Rick Heller announced Thursday. Druschel spent the past nine years as head coach at Mount Mercy University in Cedar Rapids.
"Weare excited to have Desi as our new director of baseball operations," said Heller.

The participants in the Vinton Parks and Recreation Department's Blastball program are continuing to learn the basics of baseball and softball. Brad Barker and crew of teen coaches are helping students learn hitting, throwing and fielding basics.

The 13U Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings won the 2014 Viking Classic, defeating Full Count Red 12-4 for the championship. The team went 4-0 in the tournament. The Vikings are currently ranked #6 in the state in the USSSA "AA" rankings.

The Vikings/Vikette golfers took two pairs to play in the Co-Ed State golf Tournament Tuesday at Cedar Pointe Golf Club in Boone. Seniors Dylan Rippel and Mara Jessen played in their final high school meet and had a great time. Sophomores Tyler Stueck and Lauren Tandy played well for the Vikings. There were 56 two-person teams competing on the par 72 course.
