Wendy Heineman Ewoldt was a starting guard (as a sophomore) on the 1978 Girls Basketball Team that placed 3rd in State (still at a time when there were no "classes" and the Vikettes competed against schools of all sizes). That team recorded the best record in school history (at that time -- not sure if that still stands) with a 27-3 record.

The Viking-Vikette Hall of Fame includes those who competed for their hometown schools of Shellsburg and Garrison before those schools merged with Vinton. One of the 2014 inductees is Brian White, a 1984 Shellsburg graduate.
Brian participated in summer & fall baseball, cross country, basketball and track (some smaller schools played fall baseball in the absence of football).

The Viking-Vikette Hall of Fame adds for new members this year, including Kory Winsor.
Kory was member of member of the 2000 Viking Football team to win the first District Championship and first State-playoff berth in school history. He was a member of the 2000 Class 3A state-qualifier baseball team and a member of the 2002 WaMaC Champion baseball team.

The Vinton-Shellsburg volleyball team honored seniors Payton Leonard, Chelsey Mier, Sydney Bartling, Caitlin Kruckenberg and Kathleen Steffen before the varsity volleyball match against Center Point-Urbana.
The Vikettes started slowly, falling behind early in the first game. But they rallied to beat CPU in three sets, although each game was very close.

The Vinton-Shellsburg cross country teams did very well during Tuesday's VS invitational cross country race at Rodgers Park, where VS runners finished first in five of six events.
Grace Horst won the middle school girls race. Nolan Haisman won among middle school boys. Lily Horst was the varsity girls winner and Derek Dinderman was top medalist in the varsity boys race.

The Vinton Parks & Recreation Department held its annual Two Person Best Shot this past weekend at the Vinton Country Club. 68 golfers took part in the event with great weather all day for the participants.
This year’s champions were the team of Shane Scott and Chris Boddicker who shot a seven under 63. The two battled the yips all day with the putting but finished their day off with a fantastic eagle on #18 to clinch the title.

Below are the results from this year’s NFL Punt, Pass & Kick event held at the Vinton-Shellsburg High School football field on Saturday, September 20. The total sum of their punts, passes and kick distances were recorded. Distance AND accuracy counted; the distance of each trial to either side of the measuring tape were subtracted from that trial’s distance.

For one quarter, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings played evenly with 4th-ranked West Delaware, matching the Hawks in turnovers and big plays.
After surrendering the first touchdown on a long run by Hawk senior QB Brett Lammers, the Vikings responded with a long run by QB Jordan Womochil. A few plays later, Womochil connected with Jordan Barnes on a 28-yard touchdown pass.

Lily Horst was second among 104 runners in the Rich Engel Cross Country Classic in Cedar Falls on Tuesday evening.
Eighth-grader Nolan Haisman was first among 117 middle school boys, leading VSMS to a second place finish. Grace Horst finished second in the girls Middle School race to lead the VSMS girls to a 3rd-place finish in team standings.

After trailing for most of the first half, the Vinton-Shellsburg sophomores scored two third-quarter touchdowns, including a long pass from Tyler Bartz to Tanner Davis, to take a 32-26 lead over West Delaware. But the Hawks took the lead on a TD with 10 minutes left, and converted the two-point play for a 34-32 lead.
After the Vikings' final drive stalled with less than two minutes left, the Hawks ran out the clock, lining up in punt formation and running backwards until time expired.
