Hundreds remember Coach Johnson at VSWC wrestling tournament

A total of 317 wrestlers 8th grade and under came from throughout eastern Iowa to participate in the 6th Annual Vinton-Shellsburg Wrestling Club Tournament. Many honored the late VS Coach Steve Johnson with special shirts and his initials on their shoes. Johnson helped started the VS club tournament several years ago. The Alburnett wrestlers wore gold shirts in honor of Johnson, with this quote: "When your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more do more & become more, you are a leader.

Union edged out by New Hampton 26-20 in round two of HS playoffs in 2A

The Union Knights struck quickly in the first half and rode a 14-12 lead into the locker room at  half time.  New Hampton scored first in the second half to go up 18-14. Union responded with a great comeback and led 20-18 until Tenge scored on a 37 yard pass to make the final score New Hampton 26, Union 20.   Union had the ball with just under one minute  but an interception on a tipped ball allowed New Hampton to run the clock out.

VS Bowling 9-Pin tourney was a success; 2014-15 schedule listed

On Saturday, the VS Bowling team had its annual Vinton-Shellsburg 9 Pin Bowling fundraising tournament.  In the 9 Pin tournament, bowlers were able to score a strike by knocking down 9 of the 10 pins.  We saw a lot of great bowling and everyone had a lot of fun!      We had 79 bowlers compete in the 9 Pin Tournament.

Union advances to second round of 2A playoffs after winning rematch game vs. CPU

The Union Knights were not the same team they were in game two of the 2014 season when they lost to  a physical CPU team 32-12.    Union struck fast and quick with first play of the game on a long run by Dylan  Bear and then Bear stripped a defender on the two yard line and returned it for a team record 98 yard TD.

Local business honors VS cross country runners

To celebrate the success of the Vinton-Shellsburg cross country teams, Mel Davis and her parents, Terry and Bonnie Ehlinger (the mom and grandparents of freshman runner Elisabeth Davis) welcomed the entire team to Ehlinger's 66 and McDonald's on Tuesday evening.  The runners painted windows of the convenience store and restaurant (and a few cars, as well) and also enjoyed free hot chocolate.

Vikettes begin volleyball post-season at home, tonight

The Vinton-Shellsburg volleyball team will host Davenport Assumption in the opening round of Regional action tonight. The 15-17 Vikettes will play the 17-11 Knights at 7 p.m. in the VSHS gym. The winner will advance to play at Marion (31-7) on Thursday. See the Class 4A Region 7 bracket HERE.

CPU 7th grader Katcher sets Washburn meet record

Adrianna Katcher set a new meet record recently in Ames. Adrianna Katcher, a Center Point-Urbana Middle School student from Urbana, set a new meet record earlier this month at the Washburn Classic Cross Country Meet in Ames.  She ran an all-time fastest time in meet history among middle school girls (7th and 8th grade); a time of 11:43 for 2 miles. She is the only middle school girl in meet history to finish the course in less than 12 minutes.

Vikings ring Victory Bell three times on Friday

Vikings help injured QB Jordan Womochil ring the victory bell after Friday's win. After each Vinton-Shellsburg home football victory, the players shake hands with the opposing players, then run to ring the Victory Bell near the north end zone. That happened after the freshmen team's 16-0 victory, and again after the varsity's 33-22 win over Crestwood.  But it happened a third time, on Friday.  Here's why: As the game's final minutes ticked away, as the Vikings had the ball and a 12-point lead, the crowd suddenly hushed as VS quarterback Jordon Womochil was injured.
