VS teams begin state competition today; coach shares unusual 'omen'

Coach Kalous says today's speeding ticket is an omen of how fast the team will be at State. Heather Kalous hopes the speeding ticket she got on the way to school today is a good omen.  The Vinton-Shellsburg High School girls track coach showed the ticket to the student body during the pep rally before the athletes left for the 3-day event at The Blue Oval of Drake Stadium. Vikette soccer team loses at Independence, Solon

Following 5-1 wins vs. Benton Community and Anamosa, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes found themselves on the other side of a 5-1 score, losing by that margin to Independence on Friday, May 16. The Vikettes also lost, 6-0, at Solon on Tuesday evening.  Sophomore Chloe Osborn scored the Vikettes' loan goal vs. the Mustang. The team is now 7-6 on the season and will travel to Monticello Thursday before hosting West Delaware in the final regular season game of the year on Friday.

Vikings advance to District golf tourney with strong 2nd-place showing at WD

Viking golfers hold their 2nd place medals after the Regional event at West Delaware. The Vinton-Shellsburg boys golf team placed second in Manchester at Pin Oak Links to qualify for district play. There will be only five teams at Waverly Municipal Golf Course Friday as the Vikings try qualifying for state. The Vikings put together a competitive round from all players to move on. Tyler Stueck, who fired 80, led the Vikings. Daniel Janssen carded 84 and Grant Noren carded 85.

25 X 3: Three Red Cedar Shooters earn perfect scores at Xavier

Trap team's Bastian Primmer, Drake Tilson and Jared Merchant each shot a perfect 25 last weekend. The Red Cedar Shooters celebrated  three 25-Straights, one each from Senior Bastian Primmer (his first ever!), Senior Drake Tilson and Sophomore Jared Merchant (his first ever too!), during last Saturday's meet in Cedar Rapids. Drake Tilson was in a 4-way tie for Top Male Shooter with 49/50 and the end of the Xavier meet, and ended the day as 4th Place male overall for the event.

7 of 7 for VSMS 7th grade boys track team

"They did it. The perfect season," says coach Rich Haisman of the magical 7-meet win season for his 7th grade boys track team. An added benefit for the coach was seeing his son, Nolan, be part of the team. The coach also offered special congratulations to the school record holders in the 4x800 relay, 10:13. "It was an amazing finish to a great year.

Albert Auto Night this Sunday, May 25 at Benton County Speedway

In what has become one of the most anticipated events of the season at Benton County Speedway, Albert Auto Service returns to sponsor the weekly racing program this Sunday, May 25, in Vinton. Prizes and increased purse money will be up for grab throughout the evening during the company’s third straight year of sponsorship at the speedway.

Vikettes sending four individuals, 4 x 200 team to state

This group of VSHS athletes will represent the school at the State Track Meet this weekend. The following Vinton-Shellsburg girls track team members, including sophomores Lily Horst, Bristi Gerber and Maci Griffith, earned a trip to the State Track Meet this coming Thursday-Saturday, with their strong performances in the District meet on Thursday:  3000-Lily Horst  1500- Lily Horst  200- Payton Leonard  400- Payton Leonard 800- Bristi Gerber Long Jump- Maci Griffith 4x200- Dawne Schminke, Payton Leonard, Sydney Robertson, & Lodorshae Mull.

On to State! Vikings overcome rain, cold to set season bests at District event

On to State: Senior hurdler Jacob Bunge is among many Viking qualifiers. Last night was a very special night for the Vinton-Shellsburg Boys track team, says coach Aric Chvala. “The cold and rain in Tama didn't stop the Vikings from performing the best they had all season,” said the coach. “There were incredible performances all night long.' The coach praised his athletes for their strong showing: Derek Dinderan and Jordan Evans began the string of Viking successes in the 3200.

Tandy leads Vikettes at S. Tama

Freshman Lindsey Miller made her varsity debut at S. Tama. Playing without two varsity golfers, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes finished in seventh place at the Sout. The VS girls soccer team is "doing great," says coach Dave Cornell, after the Vikettes' 5-1 win at Benton Thursday evening, where they played on an artificial turf like the one athletic leaders hope to have installed in Vinton in the near future.
