Hawkeye Dirt Tour opens in Vinton, May 13

Opening night brings the XSAN Hawkeye Dirt Tour back to the first track the IMCA Modified division called home.  The Tuesday, May 13 IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified feature at Benton County Speedway pays $1,000 to win, a minimum of $150 to start and is a qualifying event for the 2014 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot. Previous tour winners at Vinton include Vern Jackson of Waterloo in 2011, Jeff Waterman of Quincy, Ill.

Wamac tie-breaker for Noren as Viking golfers earn many medals in two events

Conference medalists: Tyler Stueck (7th) Grant Noren (3rd) and Austin Carolus, (10th). The Viking golf team was at home Friday for a dual with South Tama.  The Viking carded their best score of the year shooting 159 while defeating South Tama who carded a 171.  Medalist Daniel Janssen who carded a 39 won the medal on a card back over teammate Austin Bohnsack.  Austin’s 39 won him his first medal on varsity as the runner-up medalist.

Little Viking Invitational: VSMS 7th graders win fourth meet; 8th graders second

Blake Bohnsack won the 200M hurdles and tied for 4th in the high jump. The Vinton-Shellsburg Middle School boys track teams have had a great year, as the teams have finished near the top in most of their meets. The seventh grade boys tied for first place Tuesday in the Little Viking Invitational, while the eighth graders finished in second place. This follows first-place team finishes by the seventh grade team at Independence, Solon and Benton Community.

Jessen, Tandy lead Vikettes to 3rd place finish in Wamac West tournament

The VS girls finished in third place in the Wamac West golf event. Led by Lauren Tandy and Mara Jessen, the Vinton-Shellsburg girls golf team finished third in the Wamac West tournament. Tandy (48) and Jessen (49) were among the medalists for the event. Vikettes win at Union; boys finish close second

Payton Leonard led the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes at the Union track meet, scoring 18 points for her team, at the Union Invitational on Friday.  The girls won the meet with 89 points, 21 points ahead of second-place Union. The Vikings finished a close second, with 98 points. Nolan Sagan scored 20 of the Vikings team points.  See complete results HERE.

Vinton-Shellsburg Red Cedar Shooters take 4th place honors

CFGC 4th Place Black Squad The Vinton-Shellsburg Red Cedar Shooters took 4th place honors at the 29th Annual Cedar Falls Gun Club High School Meet Saturday. Red Cedar's Black Squad, composed of Drake Tilson, Nick Stein, Sara Jorgensen, Hunter Martin and Cole Garwood took the 4th Place honors with a team score of 220/250, just 6 shots off the first place Squad, Waterloo West.

Janssen leads Vikes to win at Amana

The weather finally broke a little Thursday and the Vikings played well in sloppy conditions to win the triangular meet at the Amana Colonies Golf Course. The Vikings posted a 170 to defeat Marion with 178 and Clear Creek Amana with 186. Daniel Janssen led the Vikings with a 40 and just missed being the medalist due to a card back. Tyler Stueck was in the running as well with a 41.

Tandy earns medalist honors in Vikette home triangular win

Mara Jessen tees off to begin her round on Thursday afternoon. It was a miserable night for golf on Thursday when cold (49 degrees), wet and windy weather canceled track meets throughout Iowa (including the planned V-S boys meet).  The Vikette golf team, however, turned in one of its best rounds of the season, defeating Clear Creek-Amana and Don Bosco by more than 30 strokes in a home triangular at the Vinton Country Club.

Horst breaks own VS school record in 3000M

Lily Horst (right) helps VS relay teams to victory and has set new school record in 3000M run. Vinton-Shellsburg sophomore long distance runner Lily Horst has broken her own school record.   At the Benton Relays last month, Lily ran a 11:16.01 in the 3000 meters.  That breaks her old record of 11:27.62.  Way to go Lily!!

Vikings win, Vikettes very close second at VS track meet

Jacob Bunge won the 400M hurdles event and was part of the first-place shuttle hurdle team. The weather finally -- and barely -- cooperated with the Vinton-Shellsburg home track meet schedule. A few weeks after the Early Bird event was delayed and then canceled, a few teams gathered in Vinton for the boys and girls invitational on Tuesday evening. Athletes and spectators endured cold, windy damp conditions. The Vikings won by a large margin, with 200 points, 60 more than the second-place team.
