Innovation-Technology-Economics: Dairy Farming for the Future is Theme
Dairy farmers—mark your calendar! Dairy Iowa will convene a meeting in celebration of June Dairy Month on Wednesday, June 4, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Heartland Acres Agribition Center, 2600 Swan Lake Blvd. in Independence, Iowa.
This year’s theme, Innovation-Technology-Economics: Dairy Farming for the Future, provides key information to take your farm into the next decade and beyond.
Iowa Learning Farms to host cover crops field day
Iowa Learning Farms, along with the Union Grove Lake Watershed Project and the Tama Soil and Water Conservation District, will host a “Cover Crops for Forage and Grazing” field day on Thursday, June 5, at the farm of Randy and Melissa Sienknecht in Gladbrook, Iowa from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The event will focus on providing information on using cover crops, a water and soil conservation method, as material for grazing and forage.
Iowa Certified Grazier Program Scheduled for Maquoketa
Experienced Iowa graziers and others looking to upgrade their forage management programs should join the Certified Grazier program. This is the third year Certified Grazier classes will be held in Iowa. Past participants in the Greenhorn Grazing series, or other in-depth grazing programs, will benefit from this “next level” programming.

5th Annual Breakfast on the Farm
Join the Northeast Iowa Dairy Foundation for the 5th Annual Breakfast on the Farm Saturday, June 21, 2014 from 8:30 am-noon at Iowa’s Dairy Center, Calmar, Iowa. We’ll serve up a great wholesome breakfast and provide guided tram tours of the nationally-recognized Dairy Center. The kids will enjoy the chance to meet some calves, plus families can visit several educational exhibits, milk a cow and see the newly completed robotic milking units in action.
Pasture Walk to Feature Millionaire Model Farms and Organic Dairy Budgets
ISU Extension & Outreach will host a pasture walk near Farley from 10-Noon on Tuesday, June 10th at the Eric and Amanda Gaul farm. Eric and Amanda rotationally graze 180 Holsteins and crossbreeds and will lead attendees on a walking tour of their pastureland with a focus on paved surface lanes and waterlines along the pasture. Extension Dairy Specialist, Larry Tranel will also discuss updated Millionaire Model Farms and Organic Dairy Budgets.
Pasture Walk to Feature Pasture Management for Dairy
ISU Extension & Outreach will host a pasture walk near Garnavillo from 1-3 pm on Wednesday, August 27th at the Andy Schaefers’ dairy farm. Andy grazes 118 cross-breeds and will lead attendees on a walking tour with a focus on remote paddocks for bred heifers with incorporated water lines and high tensile fencing. Pasture management will be discussed with the group and Clayton County NRCS will be available to answer questions.
Four-State Dairy Nutrition and Management Conference Set
The 2014 Four-State Dairy Nutrition and Management Conference will be held on June 11-12 at the Grand River Center in Dubuque, Iowa. The conference will present the latest research on issues concerning the dairy industry including feed efficiency, calves and transition cows.
This conference is a collaborative effort of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, University of Illinois Extension, University of Minnesota Extension and University of Wisconsin-Extension.
