Cafe de Klos opens at former Legion site

Gary and Joan Dvorak have turned the ruins of the Legion building into Cafe de Klos. For the first time since 2005, a new flag waves from the pole above the building that last served as the Vinton American Legion Hall. Cafe de Klos is open.  Gary and Joan Dvorak have been working on the restaurant and building for the last couple of years, with Gary doing much of the work himself. The couple welcomed their first customers on Saturday.

Colleges bring accelerated adult learning to Cedar Rapids In 2013, Kirkwood Community College and Mount Mercy University mark their 15th year of a landmark partnership that provides working adults with a quality accelerated path to a bachelor's degree. "Our partnership with Mount Mercy has provided a tremendous service to working adults in this area," said Kay Bone, program manager for Kirkwood's adult accelerated learning formats.

Home Instead offers help for seniors, job opportunities

Home Instead owner Karen Huber, with employees Kay Peacock and Sue Noren. Home Instead, a non-medical home care company, is now serving Benton County clients from a new office in Vinton.  The company offers a variety of services, at one hourly rate. "We do everything that is non-medical," says owner Karen Huber.  One Home Instead client goes to Iowa Hawkeye football games, accompanied by a home care provider.

FEMA policy change tops list of issues for discussions with leaders in D.C.

CEO Steve Marlow, East-Central Cooperative Rural Electric Cooperative, along with 35 other representatives from Iowa’s rural electric cooperatives have returned from Washington, D.C., after calling on Iowa’s congressional delegation to get engaged and direct FEMA to reconsider their policy change and work with rural electric cooperatives to resolve the issue fairly.

Eastern Iowa College Fair Set for September 18

On Wednesday, September 18, Kirkwood Community College's rec center will be transformed into a “higher education shopping mall” as more than one thousand prospective students and their parents compare college choices from 9 – 11 a.m., at the annual Eastern Iowa College Fair. Representatives from nearly 100 higher education institutions will talk with interested area residents.

New Directions in Challenging Times: Free Information Sessions for Adults Consid

For working adults worried they don't have enough time for college, people who are between jobs and need more skills, and those who are working but know they could find a better job,  the path to education just got a little more clear.
