Registration now open for 2013 Iowa Forage & Grassland

Registration Open for the 2013 Iowa Forage and Grassland Council Conference on November 25 & 26   Registration is now open for the Iowa Forage and Grassland Council’s (IFGC) Annual Conference.  The event will be held on Monday, November 25 and Tuesday, November 26, 2013 at the Des Moines Airport Holiday Inn.  Individuals interested in forage and grassland issues will gain knowledge on a variety of industry topics and techniques through presentations and discussions.

Iowa Learning Farms hosts cover crop field day in Amana

Iowa Learning Farms, along with Practical Farmers of Iowa, will host a cover crops field day at the Iowa Artists Theatre Company in Amana, on Thursday, Nov. 7, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The event will focus on cover crops for soil health as part of the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy. The event is free and the public is invited to attend.   The field day includes discussion with Amana Farm manager John McGrath, Washington County farmer Steve Berger, and Monroe County farmer Wade Dooley, who are all using cover crops on their acres.

Open Coffee event allows business leaders to share ideas, discuss challenges

Yesterday, Vinton Unlimited hosted an Open Coffee event as part of “Creative Week” in the Creative Corridor. Creative Coffee is an opportunity for citizens in a community to get together to discuss topics that can help develop their respective entrepreneurial communities.  An open forum to discuss innovation, entrepreneurship, tech, start-ups, job markets, diversity, education, economic development, and so on.

Cafe de Klos opens at former Legion site

Gary and Joan Dvorak have turned the ruins of the Legion building into Cafe de Klos. For the first time since 2005, a new flag waves from the pole above the building that last served as the Vinton American Legion Hall. Cafe de Klos is open.  Gary and Joan Dvorak have been working on the restaurant and building for the last couple of years, with Gary doing much of the work himself. The couple welcomed their first customers on Saturday.

"Our partnership with Mount Mercy has provided a tremendous service to working adults in this area," said Kay Bone, program manager for Kirkwood's adult accelerated learning formats.

Home Instead offers help for seniors, job opportunities

Home Instead owner Karen Huber, with employees Kay Peacock and Sue Noren. Home Instead, a non-medical home care company, is now serving Benton County clients from a new office in Vinton.  The company offers a variety of services, at one hourly rate. "We do everything that is non-medical," says owner Karen Huber.  One Home Instead client goes to Iowa Hawkeye football games, accompanied by a home care provider.
