Monkeytown goes 'bananas' over diaper drive

No longer will our delivery vehicles have to return empty.  Monkeytown, an independent office supply business which delivers throughout east-central Iowa, has partnered with three local food banks for a special May Diaper Drive. While many Iowans haven’t felt the full extent of the economic downturn, some families are struggling to make ends meet.

Cover Crop Pasture Walk Planned for Northeast Iowa

  A pasture walk featuring cows grazing a cover crop of rye and hairy vetch, grass finishing, and a new “bird friendly” marketing opportunity will be held Wednesday, May 22. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach beef program specialist Denise Schwab said the event starts at 1 p.m. at the Dan Specht farm, located at 29742 Pleasant Ridge Road near Marquette.

Spring Manure Issue for Beef Feedlots

Angela Rieck-Hinz, Extension Program Specialist, Iowa State University, amrieck@iastate.edu, 515-294-9590 Spring is often a sloppy, wet, muddy scene on an Iowa beef feedlot.  While pastures may be greening up with the sun and moisture, snowmelt and rain runoff from feedlots and farmsteads can cause some challenges for manure management.

Permit to Carry Weapons class offered in Vinton

A course for Iowans to obtain their Permit to Carry Weapons has been scheduled in the area.  The four hour course covers  handgun safety, gun handling, carry options, situational awareness, interaction with law enforcement, use of force, and state and federal laws.  The course teaches students how to be safe and efficient with a firearm for personal protection.

Pinkeye Season in cattle is coming

Now that the heat of summer has arrived, we’ll soon see increases in the face fly population and we already have plenty of grass seed heads to set the stage for increased pinkeye cases in cattle.  Pinkeye, or infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis, is an infectious and contagious disease that affects the eyes of cattle. It is characterized by reddening and inflammation of the lining or conjunctiva of the eyelid and eyeball.

Estrus Sync

It seems there is no rest for our Cattlemen!  Most are just wrapping up calving season and it’s already time to start thinking about breeding season.  Many of you still have time to start an estrus synchronization program if you get started soon.  We’ve had a few updates to our synchronization options and any of your ISU Extension Beef specialists can help you schedule your program.

Agent Randy Stein earns Farm Bureau Elite Producer Award

  Randy R. Stein CLU, ChFC, LUTCF has achieved the 2013 Farm Bureau Elite Producer Award for his life insurance production.  It is the highest honor given to Farm Bureau agents; with the award given to only twelve agents this year out of over 1,700 agents in the company. Stein, an agent for Farm Bureau Financial Services in Vinton, has also earned the Super All American Award four times.
