Stephen Eschenbach, Jim Webster, AgVantage FS Receive Secretary’s Iowa Ag Leader Awards Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig honored three outstanding agriculture leaders today at the Iowa Agribusiness Showcase. Naig presented the Secretary’s Iowa Ag Leader Award for Conservation to AgVantage FS of Waverly, Certified Crop Advisor Stephen Eschenbach of Red Oak and Jim Webster of Dysart.

Benton County Dairy Wins Conservation Award

The Benton County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) has named the Schulte Dairy of Norway Price Creek Watershed Cooperator of the Year. The award recognizes farmers in the Price Creek Watershed who have implemented conservation practices that help protect water quality.“Austin Schulte has been partnering with the Price Creek Project since it began and we’re pleased with the work he’s done to improve manure management and to reduce the impacts on those downstream,” said Hank Wehrman of the Benton County Soil and Water Conservation District.

Christianson retires after 50 years

Deb Christianson shares a laugh with Keith Ervin at her Retirement Open House on Friday In 1969 there was a young lady starting her career on main street in Vinton. Deb Albert began her career in insurance at the Shreeves-Francis Abstract and Insurance Agency located at 118 E. 4th St. 50 years later, she left the office of Three Rivers Insurance next door at 120 E. 4th St. She's now known in the community as Deb Christianson. Over the span of the past 50 years, she gained a husband Larry and the two added two children Jennifer and Jarron and later 5 grandchildren.

HyVee Formally Announces plans to open in Vinton at former Shopko Building Hy-Vee Inc. announced Monday that it has acquired six former Shopko locations in Iowa and will open stores under the Dollar Fresh brand sometime in late summer.We've watched activity in the former Shopko location. The former Shopko buildings in Hampton, Cresco, Oelwein, Waukon, Dyersville and Vinton are all part of Hy-Vees plans.Dollar Fresh stores offer customers in smaller communities fresh, new product selection at low prices.

Two Advanced Calving Clinics Planned for Eastern Iowa

Dairy and beef producers are invited to attend one of two advanced calving clinics in mid-February in Edgewood and Dysart. Iowa State University Extension beef specialist Denise Schwab said anyone who attends will learn something new at the clinic regardless of experience with calving out cows.“These clinics will provide both classroom and hands-on activities presented by Iowa State faculty and private industry veterinarians,” she said.
