Update on Sergeant Smith shooting
On
Friday, April 9, 2021, Iowa State Patrol Sergeant Jim Smith #462, a
27-year-veteran of the Patrol, was shot and killed while attempting
to arrest a barricaded subject in Grundy Center. That subject
was identified as Michael Thomas Lang. During the attempted
arrest, Sergeant Smith was accompanied by three Iowa State Patrol
Troopers and a Hardin County Sheriff’s Deputy K-9 unit.

This week in the Senate looked very similar to last week as we worked on a number of issues prior to finishing the session for the year. Now in the fifteenth week, the Senate debated several bills, confirmed governor appointments to boards and commissions, and continued work on budget bills.The Senate Ways and Means Committee passed Senate Study Bill 1269 this week, which includes policy initiatives Governor Reynolds addressed in her Condition of the State speech earlier in session.

The Iowa Legislature is nearing the end of this year’s session, probably and hopefully either the end of April or the first week of May!The House passed the Administration and Regulation budget, which includes $100 million for broadband internet expansion in Iowa. This makes a strong statement about Iowa being serious about getting much faster broadband to rural areas, especially in “broadband deserts”.

I am eager to wrap up the legislative session but thankful for all the great things we have accomplished. I wanted to highlight some important legislation we have been working on this year to help better serve the health and wellness of Iowans, by providing better telehealth-care as we moved forward. Telehealth became even more important during the pandemic, and continued expansion of telehealth will benefit all Iowans.
DEA Prepares for Prescription Drug Takeback Day
Acting U.S. Attorney Sean R. Berry joins the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in announcing that on April 24th, DEA will hold its 20th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The biannual event will be held at thousands of collection sites around the country. The event is an effort to rid homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

City of Shellsburg City Council Minutes 4/20/21
4-20-21 a regular meeting of the Shellsburg City Council was called to order by Mayor Speckner at 6:00pm in Council Chambers and via conference call. Roll call was answered by Blattler, Thorkildson, Reeves, and Vogt. Chapman was absent. Reeves motioned to approve the consent agenda, second by Blattler. All ayes. Public Forum: Chad Siems informed the City if they had any brownfield sites that he could help the city through the process.
