Cottage Garden Society brings Christmas Cheer to the Courthouse

Once again, the Cottage Garden Society pulls out all the stops and brings Christmas cheer to the community. This time their handiwork can be seen on the second floor of the courthouse. The tree that they decorated holds several handmade gingerbread houses and a garland made of peppermint. The red, white and blue theme of the tree is a traditional display for the courthouse.

Lions Donates to Critical Incident Stress Management for First Responders

Dennis Lausar, Vinton Lions Club President, and Alan Woodhouse presented a $500 check to Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) supporting Benton County First Responders and crisis interventions. Receiving the check is Braxton Morrison, President, and Co-Founder of CISM. CISM began holding interventions for first responders in 2017, since then they have obtained their 501 (c)3, have an active board, and numerous other certifications that support area first responders.

P.E.O. Chapter HG Recognizes Continuing Education Grant Recipients

Roxanne Ervin, P.E.O. Chapter HG member (middle)  awards $3000 Continuing Education Grants to Shelby Stender, Vinton (left) and Darcy Duhart, Urbana (right).  Members of Vinton’s P.E.O. Chapter HG met at Cindy Elwick’s home on Saturday, December 4th for a Christmas Brunch. Guests of honor were Darcy Duart and Shelby Stender who were recently awarded P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education Grants from the P.E.O. Sisterhood and sponsored by Chapter HG. Each grant was for $3000.Duart, from Urbana is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in nursing.

City of Lights Continues the "Deck the House" contest

Vinton, City of Lights continues the annual Deck the House contest this year. The Contest also includes businesses, so don't forget to vote for these competitors as well. Organized by Vinton Parks and Recreation, there are two categories of voting in the residential contests. There will be three winners for the Griswold Display. For those wondering what that means, according to the urban dictionary, it is "a house or display that has been decorated with way too many holiday lights, to be almost blinding.

Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive

The Vinton Knights of Columbus would like to thank the local communities for their generous support of our 2021 Tootsie Roll Drive.  With your support, we were able to generate just over $2300 for support for the intellectually disabled.  This represents our most successful campaign ever.  On Thursday night, the Knights presented checks to Vinton Shellsburg United Special Olympics and the ARC of East Central Iowa for $1,035 each.

Santa and the Elves help the Salvation Army

You grabbed your list, and you hope that you didn't forget anything as you pull into the parking lot of Fareway. Then you spot them at the door. It's Santa, or maybe it's his elves, or maybe it's a family singing and dancing to Christmas music. Whoever you might see there, ringing the bell and raising funds for the Salvation Army is there to bring a smile to your face and a little Christmas cheer.

Holiday Lights Punch Card Winner Announced for Week 1

Vinton Unlimited announced the first winner of the Holiday Lights Punch Card drawing. The winner drawn for this week's winner was Barbara Greenlee who won $50 in Vinton Value Dollars. Each week, shoppers who visit the participating stores of Vinton and get their cards punched, can enter their cards for a drawing each week. The final drawing will be the week of December 27th, the same time that a grand prize winner will be drawn from all of the submitted cards over the past month.

Three administered Oath of Office before Council Meeting

Bethany Gates, taking the oath of office as the 4th Ward Council Member Two city council members were sworn in and took their seats on the city council on Thursday evening before the City Council Meeting began. Bethany Gates, 4th Ward Council Member was sworn in to fill the 4th Ward vacancy left by the death of councilman Nathan Hesson at the beginning of this year. Rylie Pflughaupt, At-Large Council Member was elected also to fill a vacant seat left when Brian Parr submitted a letter of resignation due to relocating outside the city limits.

Second Crash on Hwy 150 North this week

On 12-8-21, at about 2:47 PM, The Benton County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a motor vehicle crash north of Vinton on Hwy 150 at the intersection of 55th St Dr.  A southbound Ford pickup truck was rear-ended by a southbound Nissan.  The 2 occupants of the truck were both transported to area hospitals for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

Clipper Corner donates $1,250 to Gifts of Hope

Clipper Corner participated in Round-Up for Hope through the month of October donating funds to support Gifts of Hope.VGH is thankful for the efforts of the Clipper Corner staff and the $1,250 donation supporting breast cancer awareness, women's health, and free access to mammograms.
