Another successful weekend is in the books for Boomfest/Boomtown 2022! The Kiwanis started off with the annual Bring the Noise 5K race covering a section of Vinton. While that was happening, Boomfest was taking shape in the downtown area. Many businesses and vendors set up their wares to display for residents and visitors alike. Originally, Boomtown started out as an extension of the fall meeting of the Iowa Pyrotechnic Association and club shoot.

The VS Post Prom is back at it again! They have several things going on in the next few weeks and would love your support. The first is the VS/Viking Pride apparel. Help us support two local businesses- Cameron's has the Viking Pride and Blessed Duo has the VS apparel. All orders are due next Thursday, September 1 and can be purchased online. Get your shirt or sweatshirt to wear on game days and support any team.

An earth-shaking pyrotechnic experience you will not soon forget! Don't miss this fireworks display from the Iowa Pyrotechnic Association, it's known as the best fireworks in the Midwest! Rain or shine!All of the fun will kick off for Boomtown at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 27 at the Benton County Fairgrounds. Entrance to the fairgrounds is $5 per person walk/in.

Dwight and Bonnie Sanders, formerly of Benton County, were inducted into the 2022 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a ceremony at the 4-H Exhibits Building at the Iowa State Fair on Sunday, August 21. Ninety-eight counties selected 133 inductees for outstanding service and dedication to 4-H. Inductees, or their surviving family members, were presented a certificate by the Iowa 4-H Foundation President, Julie McGonegle, and State 4-H Program Leader, Debbie Nistler.
FFA - August 25th, 2022 12:46 pm

The Iowa State Fair was held in Des Moines August 11th-21st. New foods, games, and exhibiting opportunities attracted many to attend; including some of the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA members. Throughout the fair, members showed off their SAE projects, lent a helping hand whenever possible, and overall had a good time while they were at it. Many accomplishments were awarded to them as a result.

After the wood fired flames extinguished along the Iowa State Fair’s Grand Concourse, Steve Heaberlin of Warren County was crowned the 2022 Iowa Farm Bureau ‘Cookout Champion’ of the 58th annual cookout contest at the Iowa State Fair. Heaberlin’s coffee-rubbed smoked beef ribs were voted as the championship-winning dish among dozens of qualifiers from around the state at the Farm Bureau Day tradition.

As students arrived at Tilford Elementary for their first day of school, you wouldn't have known for most that they had been gone for the summer. Many picked up where they left off greeting each other and the teachers in the hall. Some looked a bit apprehensive but so did some of the parents. There were last minute payments being dropped off for lunches and last minute registrations.

The Izaak Walton Red Cedar Chapter is hosting an evening of brainstorming and input from the community and current members. The chapter is seeking ideas pertaining to past or future events and other community outreach programs. A meeting will be held on the evening of August 30th, 2022 at 7 pm at the IWLA clubhouse in Vinton. The ultimate goal is to fill an upcoming 2023 calendar marking future events.

1,000 a number that pre-schoolers can't comprehend quite yet. But that is the number of books that this family has read in an attempt to read that many books before the first day of Kindergarten. The challenge was issued by the Vinton Public Library. The library provides a folder with pages that have stars that are crossed off as the family finished each book.
