Tuesday morning, north of Vinton on highway 150, a semi left the road near the Brandon turnoff. For an unknown reason, the driver drifted off onto the shoulder, resulting in the semi rolling onto its side and came to rest in the ditch. The driver was freed from the vehicle by the Vinton Fire Department and taken to Virginia Gay by North Benton Ambulance for evaluation.

Greg Semelroth of Atkins won the second top prize in the Iowa Lottery's "Holiday Magic" scratch game. He purchased his winning ticket at The Depot, 188 Park Ridge Road in Atkins, and claimed his prize Tuesday at the lottery's Cedar Rapids regional office.Holiday Magic is a $10 scratch game that features seven top prizes of $100,000 and overall odds of 1 in 2.

VGH has a rich history of people that have given various donations of time, talents and expertise.One of these citizens is John KetchenI think John was destined to become part of VGH since his birth, which occurred many years ago at the original hospital site, the former Tilford academy on the corner of 13th street and 1st Ave., (where VanSteenhyse/Teahen funeral home is currently located)John is a Vinton native, leaving his hometown to attend the U of I, and after graduation moved to Florida to start his first job as VP of Fidelity Federal Savings & Loan in West Palm Beach.

The Vinton Lions Club's Annual 11th Chili supper raised funds to support Eastern Iowa Honor Flight. EI Honor Flight Board President Dick Bell, Vice President Jason Brandon, Official Photographer Frank Grizel, Mary Seely, Funding Coordinator, and Vinton native Roger Uthoff, Advisor to the Board were at the Wednesday meeting receiving a check for $8000 from Vinton Lions President Dennis Lasaur and Treasurer Dr.

Santa had a sleigh full of fun on Saturday at the Breakfast with Santa event. The event is held at the Vinton Skate Center each year. He met with children from around the Vinton area. Santa did so well that there were only a couple rounds of tears this year. One little boy asked, "How did he know my name??" Well, he's Santa, of course!Thanks G.W.!Pictures can be seen here.

The Shellsburg Lions Club has donated to the Share Food Pantry $100 each for Thanksgiving and Christmas. This is an annual donation for the Food Pantry to help support the community. We wish to thank everyone in the community who supports the Shellsburg Lions Club.

The Vinton Guild of Fine Arts has been quietly working on several projects that will bring smiles to both the residents and visitors of Vinton. Their first Back Alley Art Mural has arrived on the back wall of the Sherman Building, in the alley across from City Hall. The group would love for you to take a picture and tag their Facebook page which can be found here! There are other projects in the works that will appear as they are completed.

With the holiday season upon us, giving to those we care about most is at the forefront of our thoughts. For many, this also includes giving to causes we are passionate about as nonprofits in our community need charitable support to address ever-growing local needs. Now is a great time to give to a nonprofit agency fund of the Benton County Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa.

John's Qwik Stop participated in Round-Up for Hope through the month of October donating funds to support Gifts of Hope.
