Viva Las Vegas Brandon Car Cruise

The small town of Brandon celebrates its Brandon Days each year with fun for the whole family. The town gathers for a parade, and most gather at the park for food, fun,  fellowship and all kinds of activities for kids to enjoy.  This year's theme was 'Viva Las Vegas.' The afternoon saw antique cars gathering around the ballfield in preparation for the cruise through downtown Brandon.

Quilts of Valor recipient Terry Schild

I'm a huge fan of the Quilts of Valor ceremonies. There are so many of our men and women out there that have gone through wars, fighting alongside so many other good people. Why? As one of the presenters said, "So that she could put her three little boys to bed at night and not worry about a bomb going off or them being gassed while they slept." The Quilts of Valor is a program that awards quilts to men and women who have been in battle.

JAKES Day event brings 30 children to Izaak Walton

The temperature was into the mid-90’s and heat indexes over 100 degrees but that did not hamper JAKES Day sponsored by the Blue Creek Springtime Monarchs, Benton County’s chapter of the National Wild Turkey Foundation (NWTF). 30 kids ages 4 - 15 attended along with an additional 25 parents, volunteers, and chapter members. After registration and a safety discussion, everyone had the opportunity to participate in four stations: trap shooting, target shooting on the rifle range with .

Benton County in 6th place with the most Born and Bred Iowans

If you've lived in Benton County for any length of time, you soon realize that most everyone is related to someone you know, someone you went to school with here or your neighbor. And it's not your imagination. Benton County came in 6th place in Iowa of all the counties in with the most born and bred residents in Iowa. Someone at Stacker thought it would be a good project to run the numbers to find out which counties in Iowa had the most born and bred Iowan in it.

Shellsburg opposes Landmark Recovery plans for Addiction Recovery Center

Updated: August 10. 2022The Board of Adjustment did approve the “conditional use” of the former Rock Ridge Residential Care Site in a 4-1 vote. Outpatient service are not part of the approval under the conditional use.---Thursday night's meeting held at the Legion Hall in Shellsburg addressing the possible transformation of the former Rock Ridge Residential Care facility into a possible addiction recovery treatment center operated by Landmark Recovery, was met with opposition from the community.

Two Individuals Arrested in the death of Palo Murder of Jodie Bevans

Tacoa Talley On the evening of August 3, 2022, Deputies of the Benton County Sheriff’s Office and Agents of the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation arrested thirty-four year old Samantha Faith Bevans of Palo, Iowa for the death of Jodie Bevans. On the morning of August 4, 2022, thirty-eight year old Tacoa Talley of North Liberty, Iowa was also arrested for the death of Bevans.
