By: Isabel Mullinex, Co-ReporterOn Tuesday, February 1st, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA chapter officer team attended the annual FFA Legislative Symposium at the capitol building in Des Moines. This is an event that about 5% of Iowa’s FFA members historically attend.The team started the day with a meeting with Iowa FFA State Officers to set expectations for the day.

By: Co-Reporter, Grace SchminkeOn Friday, February 4th, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter held their annual Spaghetti Dinner. The dinner had been planned to be during the Vinton-Shellsburg vs. Benton Boys Basketball game bringing in a lot of attention. The chapter started preparing on Thursday by making the brownies and cooking the hamburger. On Friday members put out signs around town to try to get even more people to show up, unfortunately the weather didn’t fully cooperate.

Sometimes construction work will require a certain area or entrance to be blocked off, and sometimes it may require us to close for part or all of the day. Lance Lillibridge of Vinton, is the current State President of the Iowa Corn Growers Association. Lance and his wife Heidi farm north of Vinton and both are passionate about farming and are always willing to share their love of farming with others. Lillibridge spoke to the Vinton Noon Kiwanis club on Tuesday. As president of the Iowa Corn Growers Association, he explained that the Iowa Corn Growers is made up of two different Boards.

The Vinton Lions Club took a moment to honor two of its long-time Lions Club members at their weekly noon meeting. Larry Druschel was recognized for his 50 years of service along with Dick Kerdus who celebrated 45 years. We are grateful for their commitment to service to our community.

A former Center Point-Urbana Middle School Homeroom, Science and Language Arts teacher was arrested and charged with Sexual Exploitation by a School Employee. 40-year-old Adam Lee Hildebrandt resigned last year.He began having an inappropriate relationship with a 13-year-old female student during the 2020-2021 school year. The student stated that she confided personal issues to him in December 2020 and that their relationship started to change shortly after.

A threatened species, the Blanding's turtles have arrived at the Vinton Veteran's Memorial Airport. No, it's not a petting zoo, and they didn't arrive here via a flight. They inched themselves there all by themselves. Whenever anything is done at the airport the FAA and the Iowa DNR want to know what's happening on the land. So every inch of the property is inspected to make sure that some rare animal or species isn't on the premises.

Applications will be accepted until June 1, 2022Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig encourages eligible farm owners to apply for the 2022 Century and Heritage Farm Program now. The program was created by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation to recognize families who have owned their farms for 100 years and 150 years, respectively.

Vinton Lions Club hosted Matt Phippen, RAGBRAI Director of Operations, at the Wednesday noon meeting. Matt shared with the Lions membership about the history of his evolvement into his love for bicycling. His work with Scheels fueled his passion and expanded opportunities and experiences over the last 23 years. Matt energizes those around him by sharing the vision of RAGBRAI and the plans for this upcoming year and the future of RAGBRAI.
