Dead Men and Women Talking

The Center Point Historical Society's annual Cemetery Walk took place on September 18 at the Center Point Cemetery. Among this year's five subjects who "talked" were a WWII Navy veteran, Raymond Durow, who survived the sinking of his ship by the Japanese; a 19th Century farm wife, Rebecah Leonard Gilchrist, who didn't survive a danger much closer to home; and John Osborne, a teenage soldier who survived the Revolutionary War.

Vinton Shellsburg Exceeds at Kirkwood Landscaping

By: Co-Reporter, Grace Schminke On Wednesday, October 5th, Six members of the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter attended the 1st ever Kirkwood Landscape Challenge. Members went into this contest with an open mind and were excited to see what the day was going to bring. The day started with all members who participated going to an educational session to learn about their contests so they would know what to expect when arriving at the contest.

VS FFA Judges Soil

VS FFA Judges Soil  By: Co-Reporter, Grace SchminkeOn Wednesday September 28th, 17 members from the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter attended the District Soil Judging Contest at Hawkeye Community College. In preparation for this contest, members spent many hours after school learning and practicing how to judge soil, with Mark Pingenot, who helped them prepare. Through the weeks before the contest the members traveled to different pits and looked at the differences to become familiarized with what all of the possibilities looked like.

VS Spirit Flags are Now Available!

The VS Spirit flags are now available. There are approximately 10 left.  They are $40 each and are available for pick up at Wilson Hite Insurance.  There are also VS Tumblers and Umbrellas available each for $20.   All proceeds help Post Prom provide a safe and fun environment for the juniors and seniors to attend after Prom.  Please email post.

Freedom Rock in Shellsburg gets an upgrade

The Shellsburg American Legion Post has made improvements in the area surrounding the Freedom Rock located next to the Shellsburg Legion. The Legion added asphalt to the area around the Freedom Rock located on the property and it looks spectacular! The Freedom Riders made a $3,000 donation toward the project.The new drive compliments the area quite handsomely.

TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF IOWA 150 AND 55TH ST. WEST OF URBANA BEGINS MONDAY, OCT. 17

According the the Iowa Department of Transportation, Concrete pavement work on the Iowa 150 curve west of Urbana at the intersection with 55th Street and 31st Avenue at the new roundabout will require temporarily closing Iowa 150 and 55th Street beginning on Monday, October 17, until mid-November, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s New Hampton construction office.

One CPU Student stabbed, one arrested at VSHS

October 10, 2022, at around 7:36 PM Vinton Police Officers were dispatched to the Vinton-Shellsburg High School for a report of a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers observed one male student assisting another male student outside of the high school building. From witness statements Officers determined that a 16 Y/O male stabbed a 15 Y/O male with a knife after a verbal altercation in the high school commons area.

Shellsburg receives $10,000 grant as part of Empower Rural Iowa Grants

Gov. Reynolds announces more than $450K in Empower Rural Iowa Grants to Advance Innovative Rural Development Initiatives   DES MOINES – Governor Kim Reynolds and the Iowa Economic Development Authority announced today that a total of more than $450,000 in grants have been awarded through six Empower Rural Iowa Grant Programs. The grant awards will support rural initiatives spanning from child care and housing to workforce attraction and leadership development in more than 20 counties.
