IOWA 21 INTERSECTION WITH U.S. 30 TO CLOSE MARCH 28 FOR INTERCHANGE CONSTRUCTION

March 15, 2022 – An interchange grading and paving project at the intersection of U.S. 30 and Iowa 21 will require closing Iowa 21 north of U.S. 30, near Elberon, and south of U.S. 30, near Belle Plaine, from 7 a.m. Monday, March 28, until Fall 2023, weather permitting, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation’s Marshalltown construction office.

Dr. Song speaks to the local Kiwanis Club

Dr. Kyle Song recently spoke to the Vinton Kiwanis Club about his experience and how he got into the medical field. Born and raised in New York, and with his parents are still living there Dr. Song and his family have now settled in Iowa. After attending college at Virginia Tech, Song's first choice was to attend the Animal Science program and specialize in poultry.

Vinton Shellsburg FFA Competes at Sub-Districts

By: Co-Reporter, Isabel MullinexOn Wednesday, February 23rd, the Vinton Shellsburg FFA chapter had 27 members compete at the Sub-District competition held in Cedar Falls, Iowa. These members competed in various activities and competitions and practiced many hours to be successful in these. Some members were able to watch and support fellow FFA members during competitions as well since they were set to perform at other levels.

Search begins for Benton County Fair Queen

Join in the Fun as The Benton County Fair Is Looking for Candidates to run for the 2022 Benton County Fair Queen ContestThe Benton County Fair is looking for young women who are interested in serving as a representative of the fair by becoming the Benton County Fair Queen. As a representative for the Benton County Fair, the queen will be asked to assist with various contests and activities during the county fair in June as well as helping with other promotional activities/parades.

Cub Scouts Pack 47 hold Arrow of Light Ceremony for Carter Smith

Cub Scout Pack 47 held the Arrow of Light ceremony recognizing one of their own, Carter Smith the son of Cody and Melissa. Carter has completed all of the ranks of the Cub Scouts. He will now be moving on to the Boy Scout Troop. The Blue and Gold Banquet and Arrow of Light Ceremony celebrated Carter's achievements in the Cub Scouts. In 2019 membership in the Cub and Boy Scouts ran approximately 1.

City Waives Building Permit Fees for those affected by the Tornado

At Thursday night's meeting, the Vinton City Council approved a resolution that would waive the building permit fees for those who need to make repairs from the F1 tornado that touched down on Saturday, March 5th.Residents will still need to contact City Hall to apply for a permit. 

Vinton Shellsburg FFA Celebrates National FFA Week

Annabelle Newton and Bailey Weeks taught Vinton Shellsburg students how to rope using hay bales. By: Co-Reporter, Grace Schminke From February 19th through February 26th the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter and many others celebrated National FFA Week. The chapter put together a full week of fun activities for both members and the whole school to do, there was a dress-up day for each school day of the week. On Monday, members delivered cookies to local businesses that have shown support to the chapter throughout the years.

Benton County Sheriff's Vehicle rear ended while responding to Accident on I-380

The Benton County Sheriff's Department's Deputy Coshow was assisting with an accident call on Sunday, March 6, 2022, on I-380 in Benton County. While assisting with the removal of another vehicle at the accident site, a vehicle approached the scene from the rear, at 11:40 p.m. The Iowa State Patrol report states that Caleb Rainey, 28 of Columbia, Missouri, failed to slow or change lanes to avoid the emergency vehicles.

If a company contacts you playing on that "veteran" theme, be wary.As with any "sales" call, visit, email or other communications soliciting for you to purchase a product or service, beware.

AMVETS present the local Vinton-Shellsburg FFA with Donation

Members of the AMVETS Post 218 attended the local Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter meeting to present the local organization with a donation. A former FFA member himself, Dennis Miller, told the group that "60 years ago on this day, I was serving as the FFA Chapter President in Wisconsin." Miller presented the group of about 30 students with a $200 donation to the chapter.
