Iowa State University recognized 4,798 spring graduates on May 7 and 8. Iowa State awarded 4,176 undergraduate degrees, 609 graduate degrees and 143 veterinary medicine degrees. Students had the opportunity to attend in-person ceremonies and celebrations at Hilton Coliseum and Jack Trice Stadium, which were live-streamed for those who preferred a virtual option.

VINTON LIONS CLUB - June 3rd, 2021 3:34 pm

If you have been chosen to receive a tree through the Vinton Lions Club, the distribution of the trees is this Saturday, June 5th at the Vinton Shellsburg High School Parking lot between 8 am and noon. When you drive up, a volunteer will be available to take your name and will have you draw a number that is assigned to one of the trees on the parking lot.

The Vinton Legion George G. Luckey Post held their annual Memorial Day service at the Legion location. The service began by singing the Star-Spangled Banner and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance followed by the Post recognizing each branch of the military with their branch song and the members rising as it was played.Placing an empty chair in honor of the Prisoners of War and Missing in Action soldiers and placing a flag on it with the POW/MIA emblem on it, those present recognized those that have gone missing in action and those unaccounted for.

Kaitlynn Miller, has stepped into the position of the Christian Education Director at Wesley United Methodist Church. Part of her job has been to figure out a way to be entertaining while teaching teenagers. Another, not so fun part is of the job description is to find ways to raise money to support the youth and their endless energy. On Sunday the youth and the church as a whole celebrated their first fundraising effort which resulted in over $5,000 for the youth.

The Linn County Sheriff's department released the following information concerning a high speed chase ending in Benton County. "On 5/31/21 at approximately 8:56 p.m. a Linn County Deputy located a vehicle that had been reported stolen out of Cedar Rapids on I-380 northbound south of Center Point. The Deputy activated his emergency lights and siren to initiate a traffic stop and the vehicle failed to pull over and led the Deputy on a pursuit.

Every year, students from Vinton-Shellsburg Elementary students raise money for "Jump Rope for Heart" in an annual fundraising effort for elementary and middle school across the country. Thousands of schools and millions of kids participate each year. The program has raised over $1.2 billion since it began in 1978.Jump Rope for Heart has four simple goals:Get kids active by having them jump rope.

Emma WileyMy name is Emma Jo Wiley. I am the daughter of Todd and Denise Wiley and sister to Drew, Isaac, and Josh Wiley. We live on a family farm in northeast Benton County. I will be graduating from Vinton Shellsburg High School in May and plan to attend DMACC in Ankeny this fall, pursuing an AAS degree in Business. My community involvement includes being a member of the Harrison Willing Workers 4-H club for 9 years, as well as being an active member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Vinton where I have been involved in youth group, Sunday morning services, and Wednesday night meals.

Emma ArnoldMy name is Emma Arnold, daughter of David Arnold and Sara Yedlik. I live on an acreage apart of my family’s farm outside of Vinton. I am a Senior at the Vinton-Shellsburg High School and I will be graduating at the end of May. My plans after high school is to attend Hawkeye community college majoring in Agriculture Business Management. I plan to transfer to Iowa State to major in Agriculture Education.
