Bids being taken for upcoming Telecommunications Project

City Administrator Chris Ward examines the map of the planned route for the network fiber optics On Wednesday, there were approximately 20 contractors on hand to listen to the presentation by Farr Technologies concerning Vinton's upcoming telecommunications project. Specifics of the plan were shared with the contractors and maps handed out for those interested in bidding on and winning the project. Farr Technologies has been part of this project for most of the planning and consulting.

Mike Riege "Ambushed" by Vinton Unlimited

Mike Riege gets Ambushed by Vinton Unlimited, and thanked for his service Mike Riege, Virginia Gay Hospital's Administrator of 29 years was ambushed by Vinton Unlimited on Wednesday afternoon. Riege is retiring at the end of this week, and was honored for his hard work and dedication to quality healthcare in Benton County. Riege is the administrator responsible for transforming Virginia Gay into an excellent healthcare institution focused on family medicine that serves the entire county.

Benton Community Bus involved in accident, no injuries reported

A Benton Community School District bus and two other vehicles collided on Friday afternoon. No serious injuries were reported. The accident happened southwest of Norway on Friday afternoon. The bus was leaving from Norway Elementary and had about 40 students on the bus when it was headed to Blairstown. The bus collided with a road grader from Benton County also hitting a van that was parked on the road.

UnityPoint Health-Cedar Rapids & VGH move forward with Affiliation

Ted Townsend, Michelle Niermann, William Prowell, Mark Mossman, Michele Schoonover, Mike Riege The Virginia Gay Hospital Board and senior staff, after many months of careful evaluation, has elected to end their affiliation with University of Iowa Hospitals and has selected UnityPoint Health – Cedar Rapids to be the new affiliation partner. Critical Access Hospitals like Virginia Gay are required to maintain an affiliation with a larger health system that can provide enhanced access to expertise and medical specialists.

Money Smart Kid Essay Contest Offers Students a Chance to Win $1,000

Students in grades seven through 11 can now enter the 13th annual Money Smart Kid Essay Contest and compete for the chance to win $1,000 to help boost their college savings. The statewide essay contest is sponsored by the Iowa Bankers Association. Eligible students can enter the contest by writing an essay of 400 words or fewer, addressing the following:  “Many American families experience income volatility over the course of a year.

A Mobile Food Pantry Making a Permanent Difference

By Tami Stark On the 3rd Saturday of every month, a close yet growing group of volunteers gather together at Wesley United Methodist Church (the church by the Library) and work to provide food and household goods to over 55 people every month. The volunteer work begins on Thursday when 1 volunteer stops at a HACAP location to pick up food and another volunteer gets it to the church.

Changes to VGH and Foundation board of directors announced for 2019

James Hodgson Virginia Gay Hospital (VGH) and the Virginia Gay Hospital Health Care Foundation (VGHHCF) announce changes to their board of director members for 2019. James Hodgson retired from service on both the hospital and foundation boards after serving since 2003. Tedd Mann has also retired as a member of the foundation’s board of directors after serving since 2007.

Middle Cedar Watershed Wetland Basin plans move forward in Vinton

You might ask, "What is the Middle Cedar Watershed Wetland Basin?" as I did. The project is going to help contain enough water in the southern part of Vinton in an attempt to help prevent flooding in other areas of town. The Middle Cedar Watershed Wetland Basin: "The Middle Cedar Watershed (MCW) covers ~1.5 million acres (~2,400 square miles) in East Central Iowa and spans 10 counties: Franklin, Hardin, Butler, Grundy, Marshall, Tama, Blackhawk, Buchanan, Benton, and Linn counties.

150th Celebration Volunteers Needed

The year of the celebration has finally arrived! While the 150th celebration has been our radar for almost two years, the realization has hit once the calendar flipped to 2019!   While small, subtle nods to the milestone will occur throughout 2019, mark your calendars for August 17-24, 2019! The Walldogs are scheduled to return to Vinton during this week to give our mural history a fresh coat of paint and add new murals as well.
