Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day
Although we call it Veterans Day now, for the first 28 years of celebrating Nov. 11, Americans called it Armistice Day, a commemoration of the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Great War (Later called World War 1) ended.
Yesterday was the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1, and local veterans and history teacher Alex Vasquez were among the Americans marking the anniversary with special ceremonies and services. "Fooling the Iron Fish" Vinton Native Everett Warner helped win WWI
During World War I, several local residents and natives had a significant role in the "Great War."
Among them was Everett Warner, who was born in Vinton to a father who had lost an arm in the Civil War.
Warner spent the first few years of his life in Vinton. The family later moved to Washington, D.C. and Warner would eventually travel the world and spend much of his artistic career in Connecticut. Crash on Highway 30 takes life of Benton County resident
A semi vs. car crash took the life of an area resident on Friday evening.
A reported vehicle-semi collision happened at about 10:30 p.m. on Highway 30 east of Tama which resulted in the roadway being closed.
The crash was still under investigation on Saturday afternoon.
The Iowa State Patrol, Tama County Sheriff's deputies and Tama and Toledo police responded to the accident.
Area Students begin the holiday festivities by hanging the Greenery
It's always fun to see the town begin to get ready for Christmas, (I know we haven't had Thanksgiving yet) and part of that is the annual hanging the greenery
Area Vinton-Shellsburg students decorated local businesses greenery on Saturday, preparing the city for its first Christmas events of the season. The greenery project is a fund-raiser for GOVS, the VS scholarship program. Santa Paws is coming to town

This week, Heard heard Reade read some sentences while pronouncing a sentence. Reade had read what Heard had done, and earlier had heard what Heard had done.

Open Enrollment Period to Purchase Individual Health Insurance Begins
Residents of Vinton looking to secure individual health insurance for 2019 need to act fast. November 1 marked the beginning of the 2019 Individual Open Enrollment Period (OEP), which is the only time when individuals under the age of 65 can enroll in health insurance coverage for themselves and families without a qualifying event. The 2019 OEP runs through December 15.
