iVinton group visits Indytel in Independence

The server room at Indytel in Independence Ray Knoff, Rick Ohrt, Kurt Karr, Jason Hicok and Kim Meyer, all members of the iVinton telecom advisory committee visited Indytel in Independence Tuesday night. The purpose of the visit was to gain an understanding of how the Independence municipal telecommunications service was built and is maintained. Indytel was formed in 1999. Marty Diesburg, general manager of Indytel conducted the facility tour, answered questions and provided information about options for constructing a system in Vinton.

We want to keep her memory alive and to keep alive the spirit of philanthropy that established and has sustained our hospital.

Benton County to increase holiday patrols

The Benton County Sheriff’s Office will be working extra patrol shifts throughout this holiday season. Deputies will be focusing their attention in areas where traffic accidents happen more frequently.  This project is part of a grant from the Governors Traffic Safety Bureau.  Sheriff Randall Forsyth received a 2015-2016 grant that provides $10,000.

ISU student from Urbana killed by hit-and-run driver in Ames

EmmaLee Jacobs: Urbana teen killed in hit-and-run accident on street near ISU campus in Ames. The Ames Police Department is investigating a hit and run accident resulting in the death of a pedestrian at Lincoln Way and Ash Avenue. At approximately 7:04 a.m. Monday, Dec. 14, 2015, an Iowa State University police officer found an injured pedestrian lying in the road at the above location. Officers performed CPR on the pedestrian until emergency medical personnel arrived.

SMILE DRIVE/Operation Backpack Seeking Donations

We are happy to announce our first ever SMILE DRIVE for Operation BackPack. Help a child in need this holiday season by donating TOOTHBRUSHES and full size tubes of TOOTHPASTE! Donations will be given to 110 K-5 students currently participating in our program here at Vinton-Shellsburg.    So, the next time you are in Fareway, LaGrange's, or Clingman's be sure to buy an extra toothbrush and/or tube of toothpaste! Wreaths Across America: Many honor veterans at Mount Auburn Cemetery

This wreath in Mount Auburn honors Commander David W. Wood, who was buried at sea. At the top of the pyramid of cannonballs near the top of the hill at Mount Auburn Cemetery, a wreath will remain for the next several weeks.  That wreath was placed in honor of Commander David W. Wood, a Naval officer who was buried at sea in 2013. He had enlisted in the Navy in 1972 and retired as a Commander in 1997, after 25 years.

Gold Coin: Donor puts valuable donation in Salvation Army Red Kettle in Vinton

An anonymous donor placed this gold coin, valued at more than $1,100 in the Red Kettle at Fareway. Almost every year, some anonymous donor drops a coin into a red kettle as a Salvation Army volunteer rings  bell to announce the annual Christmas donation drive. Then when officials open the kettle, they discover a very valuable gold coin.  Vinton was the first location to report the donation of a gold coin. It happened at Fareway on Thursday.
