Virginia Gay continues making progress on new clinic construction
Mike Timmermans, Director of the Virginia Gay Hospital Healthcare Foundation, has been meeting with employees in each department of Virginia Gay to share information about the new clinic VGH will be constructing. During the meetings Mike shares information about the size, location, and configuration of the clinic so employees have information to help explain the project when patients ask questions.
Benton County Livestock Judging Team wins 1st place; advances to national event
4-H teams from Benton, Muscatine, Scott and Washington counties will represent Iowa in upcoming national 4-H livestock and meats judging contests. The teams earned the right to represent Iowa 4-H after receiving top honors in the 2015 4-H/FFA State Livestock and Meats Judging Contests.
This year saw an increase in participation for both the livestock and meats portion of the Iowa contests, held Aug.
Genealogy room offers many local records; Long keeps gathering, sorting data
Martha Long’s quest 40 years ago to find dozens of her mother’s first cousins – all of whom came from Germany at about the same period of the 1800s – has led to a life-long hobby of genealogy.
Martha now continues that hobby in a newly-renovated room at the Horridge House in Vinton, where thousands of records are available to help area residents find out more about their family tree.

City elections: Maynard to challenge Mayor Watson; two contested council seats
The deadline for candidates to file for city elections has passed, and for the first time in several years, Vinton voters will have three contested elections to help determine the future of city government.
Former council member Bud Maynard will challenge John Watson in the mayoral election. Former VU director Nathan Hesson will run against District 4 incumbent Chris Bendull.
Three lots for sale: Council meeting to include land auction
The Vinton City Council plans offer for sale three empty lots on the western edge of town to the highest bidder.
The minimum bid for the three lots is $2,000 each; the buyer must agree to build a house on the lots within one year.
Located on Q Avenue west of Highway 218 and south of First Street, the lots are just north of the storm shelter that offers protection to residents of the nearby trailer park.

On Monday, September 14th, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter representatives spoke at the school board meeting, to present the Program Of Activities for the year.
The Program Of Activities (POA) holds everything relating to the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter.
Farm Safety Day: VS FFA members help in variety of ways
On September 19th, 2015 the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter helped out with Farm Safety Day, held at the Benton County Fairgrounds. Farm Safety Day, an event that has been going on for 20 years, is all about teaching children the right way to act while on a farm, around equipment that can cause serious damage if those around it aren’t careful.

Vinton MOPS Group Meeting Weekly-New Moms Welcome!
MOPS is meeting again this school year. If you are a mom and have a child age 0 through 5th grade please join us, we'd love to have you!
We are meeting EVERY WEDNESDAY from 5:30-7:00 at Blessed Hope Chruch (located behind Theisen's), and we are open to all moms of any denomination.
At each meeting we provide dinner for moms and kids from 5:30-6:00.
