Youth specialist Applestein to speak in Vinton, Nov. 18
Nationally recognized youth care specialist and author, Charlie Appelstein will lead his "No Such Thing As a Bad Kid" all-day workshop offered at Tilford Elementary's Auditorium in Vinton on Nov. 18
Applestein is a pioneer in the strength-based practices movement that identifies and builds the strengths in individuals and families rather than focusing on flaws.
Iowa Supreme Court to hear city manager's case; former town raises rates again
The Iowa Supreme Court has agreed to rule on an important legal question concerning whether Vinton City Manager Chris Ward was acting within proper authority at his previous job when he directed a staff member to increase electrical rates.
Meanwhile, leaders in West Liberty – where prosecutors allege that Ward committed a felony by increasing electrical rates without the necessary authorization – held hearings this summer after a consultant advised them to raise those rates to levels similar to those Ward directed a city employee to use two years earlier.
VS Post Prom Committee needs six more volunteers to usher Oct. 31 Iowa game
The Vinton-Shellsburg Post Prom Committee has earned several thousand dollars by arranging volunteers to serve as ushers at home U of Iowa football games.
While most of the slots have been filled, the group still needs six volunteers for the Oct. 31 game vs. Maryland.
The volunteers will work with Whelan Security.
Those who volunteer must complete a form and authorized Whelan to do a background check.
Flaughless 5K raises $20K for Wounded Warrior Project
The hundreds of participants in the 4th annual Flaughless 5K celebrated the success of their effort, which raised an event-record $20,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project.
However, the event was also a reminder of the continued need for help for those who have fought America's wars. One of the scheduled speakers was unavailable to participate because he had to attend the funeral of a fellow Marine who recently committed suicide.
IBSSS Mary Ingalls Society asks for assistance
The Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School Mary Ingalls Society is asking your assistance in continuing our work in preserving and telling the story of the school's historical significance. This work was begun three years ago, and although much has been accomplished there is still much to do.

'Best Day:' Firefighters students look forward to Fire Prevention Week lessons
Retired Vinton firefighter Bob LaGrange saw the aerial ladder extended 100 feet above the fire station and drove to the station, where he saw dozens of children gathered around fire trucks, trying on a firefighter's equipment, or learning how to operate the nozzle of a fire hose.
"Best day on the fire department," said LaGrange, who participated in many Fire Prevention Week activities during his time on the department.
Las Vegas woman finds birth sister in Vinton, after visiting many times
Laura Blanchard says that every time she visited Vinton, she felt a deep emotion – something she couldn’t explain or even understand.
Now the Las Vegas resident knows: Vinton is where, a few weeks ago, she found her long-lost baby sister, the one her mother gave up for adoption when Laura was a young adult expecting her first child.
Homecoming: King, Queen to be crowned at pep rally tonight
Vinton-Shellsburg High School leaders will be watching the sky and weather reports today as they prepare for the annual Homecoming parade and pep rally, which will include the crowing of the 2015 Homecoming King and Queen.
There's a chance of rain in the forecast. A heavy rain could cause school officials to move the pep rally from the football field into the VSHS gym.

Kidsight screenings underway: Lions provide free service to area families
The Lions KidsSight team has conducted screenings recently at daycares, Head Start and Tilford Elementary in Vinton. They will be testing kindergarten students at Shellsburg Elementary in October.
The Vinton Lions have screened over 900 children since 2004, and they are stepping up their game this fall due to new state regulations. Such screening, whether by a paid professional or trained volunteer, is now required by law.
