VGH Foundation Board Member honored with volunteer award for serving children

Don receives his award from Teresa Barnes and Christine Deam Don Logan, former educator in the Benton Community School District and Virginia Gay Foundation member, was honored with an award for his dedication as a volunteer with the Foster Care Review Board. In a Star Press Union report, the Foster Care Revew Board characterized the reasons for Don's award by saying, "Don's experience in education and counseling is an incredible asset to the board.

Sanders Farm continues Christmas lighting tradition

Friends and family gathered at the Dwight and Bonnie Sanders Farm again over the Thanksgiving holiday to fill their yard with Christmas lights. For decades the display on 63rd Street just east of Highway 218 a few miles south of Vinton has been attracting many visitors.

Shopko in Vinton: Company hiring manager, assistant manager for new store

The four-part ALCO sign came down Dec. 1, as work on what will be the new Shopko is under way. The Iowa Workforce Development web site has been one of many online job sites offering both local employment opportunities for Vinton-area residents and good news for those who lobbied for a Shopko store to open in Vinton after the closing of Alco. Shopko advertised for store manager and assistant manager positions with a start date as early as Dec.

Supervisors seek study before considering approval of ATV ordinance

The discussion over a proposed ordinance that would allow ATV owners to drive on gravel roads in Benton County continued on Tuesday, with no changes expected in the county rules in the near future. Louie Guynn of rural Mount Auburn spoke to the supervisors during their regular weekly meeting, asking for an update on the ordinance, telling them that some ATV owners had thought the ordinance had already passed.

Blue Creek Christmas: Light display fills neighborhood north of Center Point

At 7 p.m. Sunday, Joshua Meyer pushed a big green button, and the corner of Blue Creek Court and Fee Street a few miles north of Center Point lit up, filling an entire neighborhood with lights.  Blue Creek Christmas has begun. Aaron Maue began the computerized light display, synchronized with music, in 2010. The display has grown in size and popularity since then.

50 years of lights: Heidi Koopman continues father's tradition

Heidi Koopman continues the Christmas lighting tradition her father began a half-century ago. Fifty years ago, Larry Kersten put the first of his mechanical lighted Christmas decorations along the family's fence at 5598 22nd Avenue Trail northwest of Vinton.  Now, Heidi Koopman is marking the 50th year of the light display her father began in 1965, turning on the display on Thanksgiving night.  The display captures many of the social and cultural trends that Larry Kersten observed during his 30+ years of creating displays.
