To all of those inquiring about the Holiday Train, here is the latest….. After countless phone calls last year and several already this year, I wanted to provide a little information on the Holiday Train that once ran roundtrip from Palo to Vinton. I know it was a popular, well attended event but unfortunately, the train will not be returning to Vinton in 2015.

Anyone born before 1980 remembers seeing news items about these, and living in the fear that the Cold War could turn into a Nuclear Winter. But the high school students of Kelly Steffen -- born after the Berlin Wall came down -- grew up not knowing how those issues -- and fears -- were a constant, and often daily, part of American life.

Kendra Peterson chosen to be a member of the 2015 All-State Band

Kendra Peterson of Vinton-Shellsburg High School has attained the highest individual honor available to Iowa high school musicians by being selected as a member of the 2015 All-State Band. Kendra is the Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Randy and Julie Peterson and is an instrumental student of Director Nick Waymire.   The 2015 Festival will celebrate the 69th anniversary of this prestigious event.

Cooper receives Anthony and Miller Scholarships

Kaila and Dottie Dottie Anderson recently met with Kaila Cooper to congratulate her on being named the recipient of both the Dr. Tony Anthony Scholarship and the Jeanette M. Miller scholarship.  Kaila was awarded her scholarships as an employee of Virginia Gay’s Nursing and Rehab who wants to further her education. Kaila, who graduated Vinton-Shellsburg in 2011, worked as a CNA through high school and until she passed her exams for her RN degree.

iVinton logo First, thanks again to the volunteers who worked to get this passed, those who donated toward the advertising, and our community for embracing the need to change Vinton’s digital future.  The next step will be for the ballot results to be certified, which generally takes place about 10 days after the election.  From that point the newly-empowered Vinton Municipal Electric Utility can begin sorting through the many options for moving forward.

To continue our efforts to promote shopping in Vinton, we are again offering the 0% Holiday Loan Program. This program allows shoppers to borrow money from a Vinton bank at 0% interest for up to 6 months to make purchases at participating businesses. The banks participating in this VU promotion this year are Farmers Savings Bank and Cedar Valley Bank & Trust.

Watson, Hesson, Parr win; voters overwhelmingly say yes to telecom utility

Mayor John Watson will serve at least two more years, and two new members will join him when the council begins its next session in January of 2016.  Watson, who has served for two decades, usually without election opponents, survived a challenge by former council member Bud Maynard. Watson won by fewer than 40 votes, 466-428. In Ward 4, Nathan Hesson narrowly defeated incumbent Chris Bendull, 116-107.

VGH Holiday Tree Walk off to a great start

Ornaments on one of the beautiful donated trees The kick-off this year was November 2nd when donors put their trees up in the Virginia Gay Hospital lobby.  The event ends at 5 PM on November 24th.  2015 is the 6th year Holiday trees and decorations donated by departments within Virginia Gay, area businesses, and members of the community adorn the lobby of VGH before being taken home by the highest bidder.

Found Cat looking for its owners
