Donations needed to finish 'Serving Vinton' sign project
If you have been west of town on Hwy 218 lately, you may have noticed that the old Serving Vinton sign has been taken down and preparations are being made to erect the new sign in the upcoming weeks. I am happy to report that the capital campaign, along with the Vinton Community Foundation grant, has covered a majority of the cost, however a few dollars are still needed to ensure completion of the project.
Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehabilitation celebrates U.S. News Award
Mark Mossman, Virginia Gay Hospital Board Chair, presented Jessica Henkle and Mike Riege with a plaque commemorating another U.S. News and World Report 5 Star ranking for Virginia Gay’s long term care unit. Jessica is Nurse Manager, RN, of Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehabilitation. Mike Riege is CEO of Virginia Gay Hospital.
Mossman, in a short talk prior to presenting the award, praised the staff for yet another award.
Blood drive for local supplies at VGH Friday

Vinton students help Guatemalan education efforts with greeting cards
Though they are two thousand miles apart, students in El Hato, Guatemala and Vinton are unified by a common cause: education.
In a small village in Guatemala, Maria Rosenda Recopacni, Rudy Domeyco, Dina Norberta and and two dozen other students are making greeting cards as thank-you gifts for donors to their scholarship program.
Few voters go to polls for unchallenged school board races
All of the school board candidates for Vinton-Shellsburg, Benton Community and Belle Plaine were winners on Tuesday, as few voters made it to the polls to cast ballots in an election in which all the local races were uncontested.
In V-S, incumbents Kathy Van Steenhuyse and Brenda Bartz ran unopposed. Jason Hicok and Kyle Schminke also ran unopposed for seats vacated by Megan Rickels and Angela Hazen, who chose to not seek re-election.

On August 30, 2015, Bethlehem Lutheran Church presented a gift of $102.00 to the Vinton Guild of Fine Arts.
The art guild has been extremely busy in 2015..
They created cut outs of the "Ears of Corn" that were used during Ragbrai on July 23rd, when the riders rode through Vinton. Individuals were able to stick their heads through these cut outs of corn and get their pictures taken.
Wounded soldier from WWP to speak at Flaughless 5K
The 4th Annual Flaughless 5K, a memorial event for U.S. Army soldier Dan Flaugh, is just over one month away and for the first time will have a representative from the Wounded Warrior Project -- who is one of America's wounded warriors -- speak at the event.

Fire destroys Vinton home; cause undetermined
Vinton Fire Chief Gary McKenna said authorities are still investigating a house fire at 508 10th Street in Vinton that took place overnight.
"The house is a total loss," said McKenna.
Real estate records indicate that the house is owned by LC properties, LLC., the company is owned byLeslie and Cory McKibben.
No injuries were reported; the family including two children escaped but was left homeless.
Firearms classes now offered free to law enforcement spouses
A course for Iowans to obtain or renew their Permit to Carry Weapons has been scheduled in the area. The four hour course covers handgun safety, gun handling, carry options, situational awareness, interaction with law enforcement, use of force, and state and federal laws. The course teaches students how to be safe and efficient with a firearm for personal protection.
Woman injured in Tuesday accident in 218 construction area
On Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at approximately 2 pm, The Benton County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of a two vehicle accident with injuries at the north end of the construction zone on highway 218 and the Van Horne/Newhall Corner.
A 2002 Dodge Caravan Van driven by Angela Jean Shelton age 35 of Center Junction was travelling southbound on 218 when she failed to observe stopped traffic at a construction zone.
